Haha, the album art was better once I learned that it's a picture of his 1 year old son's toy piano, but yeah it's hard to top the summer vibes artwork from Southern Air, Childhood Eyes, Ocean Ave, etc.

City of Angels has been growing on me a ton. At first I thought it was the weakest here but now I'm thinking it's upper half.

Haha, thanks Futures, and I'm totally getting there in terms of dead soul. YC is the single frayed thread of innocence & youth that I still cling to. It helps that they've walked directly parallel to my life events as well, from OA's relationships & heartbreak to Southern Air's new beginnings & hope to where we are now with Key singing about his blue eyed son when I have two. I think deep down everyone has a band like that, and if not I hope they find one.

I know it's just another gushing Sowing YC review of an objectively "just good" album and I certainly get the justified skepticim some will have. I just love this band to a fault and have to embrace it and take it all in stride. I will say that it's funny and amusing to me how it's become a meme on the site and beyond. I've found separate posts on reddit and the band discord asking for the whereabouts of my review for this album. It's surreal to see people outside the confines of Sputnik referring to me by my site username and showing genuine interest in my opinion on something. I don't think it's really happened that often if at all outside of this band, so at the very least I'm proud of that fact.

I'm not sure if this is really your style of pop punk Futures (I forget if you frequently listen to YC), but if you decide to spin this let me know what you think. Just be ready for a super polished, shining pop punk record that emphasizes concise, catchy songwriting above all else. In many ways it delivers on what Ocean Avenue did in its time. It's still wild to me that their first #1 single was from this LP and not Ocean Ave. I know a lot of people won't like how mainstream this sounds but I've embraced it.

that is so beautifully said man, it's really special to grow up with a band like that. and that is so cool you are well known as a yellowcard super fan haha! i wonder if the band knows of you. i really hope they do. you deserve backstage passes for life lol.

and i loved ocean avenue growing up and a few songs off the others. few were in madden games. for you, i will definitely check this out! i love simple hooky pop punk. should be a light, breezy and positive listen. we all need a bit of that in our lives.

I was actually trying to think of a band like that for me and I can’t come up with one. I’ve got bands that I’ve been fans of forever but I can’t think of one where my life parallels theirs or their lyrics resonate along through the years in the same way. I’ll have to think on it.

Admittedly I also listen to a lot of music with either no vocals or very ambiguous lyrics lol

Yeah in no universe is this a 5.

I just want drums that sound like real drums. Considering Travis worked with Jerry Finn, he sure is hellbent on making some of the worst sounding records ever.

The songwriting and performances here aren’t bad but similar to One More Time it’s just crunched in digital nonsense.

@Futures: I miss those Madden games man. The one with Way Away on it was amazing. At the time I was only tangentially aware of Yellowcard, so that definitely helped get me into the band. And yeah, without the emotional attachment and memories I don't expect this to be a 5 for many, but if it provides some fun upbeat tunes to get lodged in your brain then there's a place for albums like that in everyone's life for sure 🙂

@nash: maybe YC can become that band ;). Check Ocean Ave and Southern Air if you haven't. The lyrics on both are the easiest to relate to, particularly Southern Air which is a bit more mature (you may have heard both I'm just too lazy right now to check ratings ha ha). What are some of the bands you've been a fan of forever?

@WhiteNoise: That's fine, see above. This is a pretty personally significant band for me. Regarding the production I sort of get it because this is very streamlined, however I think it sounds like a massive step up from Ome More Time which was very compressed and muddled. Here, everything just sounds clean and pops with clarity.

Oh I’ve def been a fan since OA. Southern Air is the 🐐

Forever bands: August burns red, JEW, Copeland, Linkin Park, Saosin, Senses Fail, TDWP, The Early November are the main ones that come to mind. Those are the ones I’m still fans of. There are others who have fallen off hard in quality for me (Paramore, Fall Out Boy, etc)

Now that I consider, that band for me would have to be JEW, Copeland, or senses fail.

Jimmy Eat World is certainly up there in the emotional connection department for me as well. Blushing was amazing, but otherwise I'm not too familiar with Copeland's discography. Glad you agree Southern Air is the GOAT.

Whoah. Was not expecting Slex agreement on an album as poppy as this but I'll take it! 😅 Can we all agree yet that Barely Alive is an absolute gutwrencher? I die a little inside every time and it's amazing.

Self titled has better lyrics and more sentimental value, this one has way more energy and is catchier.

Southern Air, Ocean Avenue and s/t (in that order) are hard to top, but I'm looking forward to checking this out!

@lucazade: Those are probably my top 3 albums as well! I don't know that this one will land in the same tier, but it's a ton of fun and has moments that resonate super hard (Barely Alive is a gut punch). More Paper Walls-y in that sense.

@Gyromania: Let me know what you think! Where did you leave off with them?
