kind of surprised some of the backlash against arghoslent (deserved) hasn't hit infester tbh

This statement was on the To the Depths re-release:
"Lastly, unlike what some have speculated, Infester was never a racist or NS band. At most, we didn't take some of our lyrics and imagery too seriously and it showed our immaturity."
And apparently the drummer had some negative things to say about NSBM.

I had to go read the lyrics and yeah…oof. Definitely very similar “content”, but that being said I think equating that to the staunch and outspoken STANCE of Arghoslent isn’t a fair comparison at all.
|
| |
damn Infester too? see what I mean Ford?
|
| |
Yeah damn 2 bands lol

Listen key idk what data you're basing this theory on but if you have any evidence or numbers beyond "look at these 3 racist bands" out of the entire history of dm, I'm all ears
|
| |
it's more than just 3 bands man, I mean there's an entire subgenre called national socialist black metal lol
obviously I don't have any data, but in my own anecdotal experience over the years of listening to thousands of bands I can't think of a genre with a higher hit rate than metal, especially extreme metal
I'm not worried that if I look at Tortoise or Jakob's wiki page right now that I'll find out they're all Nazis or something, but I dare not look into The Chasm and ruin a good thing for myself
|
| |
Oh. I thought we were talking about dm lol
|
| |
As much of an umbrella term as 'extreme metal' is, I don't consider dm and bm that close ideologically or aesthetically speaking
you can rag on bm and the type of people it attracts to listen/make music all u want but afaic dm is quite another story

antisocial people with antisocial politics will always be attracted to black metal due to it's antisocial nature, just how it is sadly

Transgressive art attracts transgressive people and all that, I would still reserve serious exceptions for like neo nazi organizing and such.
|
| |
re: dm, kind of ironic when one of the biggest bands in the scene has/had two black members who essentially invented modern death metal guitar playing and drumming (suffocation, of course)
|
| |
i don't know how this band could possibly defended when they're on drakkar...

bands are interested in making money and this label does know how to market this genre of music. pretty sure they have plenty of non nazi bands. not an excuse but an explanation. do i like it? no not really. is it fair to strike them entirely as racists? no.
my main point either way is arghoslent is explicitly a white supremacist band in the lyrics and themes. that is the main reason why they don't get a pass. it's hard to separate that. grenadier is not even remotely close. i have seen nothing to suggest they are and can't read their minds. unless there is something concrete out there, i have no problem with my review as it is. the music speaks for itself.

| |
I couldn't have said it better myself.
Also, Arghoslent not being on streaming and Grenadier is tells us something.
|
| |
They probably have some shit beliefs, they're definitely not "based," as they say, but yeah, doesn't look like there's anything solid showing that they're Nazis at this point.

My impression was that basically every extreme metal band is operating at a loss, especially a small band like Grenadier. The only ones that make money are like Watain or something maybe. And I don't think extreme metal labels tend to have binding contracts or anything, it tends to be transactional in the underground, agreements to print vinyls and cds and stuff in exchange for shares and marketing. Would be surprised if there was a real reason they couldn't just leave.
But lyrically they seem fine to almost polar opposite of Argho even, curiously.

oh certainly but this label for sure helps them grow larger in ways other local labels can't. maybe they see it as a necessary evil, i don't know.
anyways great album! was playing it nonstop for about a week. i can't get enough of this style. so many killer riffs. i love extreme metal that is just catchy as hell, seems to be rare.

Yeah very good, might top Argho tbh.

On the subject of DM bands being racist, a guy from the band Ripped to Shreds recently said that it's common for some of the biggest death metal bands to drop the n word with a hard R backstage. Apparently Obituary and Master are racist as shit.
