Great read - can’t wait to listen!

the hook on Blackout is like jock rock lmao. extremely unconvinced this is gonna be better than East with an opener like that, not a patch on Colour of the Sky
|
| |
this has been mostly misses for me so far. Undertow is really cool but everything else has been pretty much Palms tier lol, I'm quite confused by the accolades
|
| |
last 3 songs are the real highlight on here, those probably put it above Palms but not by much

I thought Gnash was okay, Dark Glow was pretty good, and Holding On was not great. I really liked East but I'm worried about this one. The positive review is nice but I think our views on post-hiatus Thrice are sufficiently different that it doesn't give me too much confidence, unfortunately!

yeah I have 0 hopes for this but will listen to it, Thrice is kind of an autumn band for me

I was going to give it a go but still not available on Spotify... Instead we have a 4-track "single", I won't spoil the LP by listening to those since I already know Gnash and Albatross

We're agreed Rowan, I think this is thoroughly bad besides the last 3 songs
|
| |
gnash was great and the most exciting track they've done, the rest i checked out was pretty mid like the rest of their last few
|
| |
I don't think this is bad even just highly unremarkable besides that ending run

Vesper Light is probably their best post-hiatus song
|
| |
dunno if I like it more than Summer Set Fire but it's definitely up there, I like Eddie playing the Schism riff in the middle

I’ll have to listen to this again but initial thoughts say the songs here are pretty weak.

Great review and I agree with many of your points. My primary issue with H/W, is that it is anchored to H/E and doesn't stand on its own. H/W contains numerous sonic, structural, and thematic nods to H/E, which make sense within the context of the Horizons project. Unfortunately, it's been four years since H/E. Thrice, myself, and the world at large have changed, yet H/W seems entirely out of place at this moment in time.
Every moment within H/W feels like a callback, only justified by the existence of H/E. There are moments throughout the album which give the impression that things are going to take off, but ultimately the album doesn't go anywhere because at its core, it's just a delayed continuation of H/E. In short, H/W can be compared to Stranger Things, Season 5... it's nice that it's being released, but is anyone still interested?
Here's to hoping for a few decent B-Sides. The inclusion of both Dead Wake and Open Your Eyes and Dream would have elevated H/E.

yeah i gave this a listen and wow it's so incredibly disappointing. can't believe they advertised this with "gnash" being the only song where dustin belts out those old school growls. most of this is the usual tepid thrice we've gotten in the past three releases. both b-sides from horizons/west are better than anything here. it doesn't make any sense...

I wish I was more hyped but I'm definitely going in with an open mind and a bit of hope.

Nice to hear them bringing a little heavy back into their sound but that can't make up for bland songwriting and generic lyrics
