"The songs (most of them anyway) aren't bad, but they're not great and they aren't 'Babymetal'."
I don't really get this sentiment when Babymetal has been experimenting and genre-bending from the very beginning. Like, Iine and Rondo Of Nightmare couldn't be more different. Same with Doki Doki Morning and IDZ, etc. etc. It's just a little funny seeing this kind of criticism when they've been dealing with elitists crying about them not being "real metal" for their entire career and now it's that they're not "real Babymetal".
I definitely would like to see another album along the lines of The Other One but the collabs are very fun. Especially when the energy of the bands REALLY match up like with Electric Callboy and Bloodywood. I wouldn't want every album from here on out to be a collab fest but I've enjoyed all of the singles released so far and I'm always down for them trying new things.

@Sowing: I agree with troyofyort -- Sowing, Id check out either debut (since it started trend) or Metal Galaxy. Especially megitsune from debut is killer.
@LightChaotic: Babymetal has been experimenting and genre-bending from the beginning, and yet have managed to always sound just like Babymetal. Obviously, having Su as the vocalist has gone long way towards keeping things uniform regardless of genre, but also having the same core writer team and/or quality control entity has never let things skid off the rails no matter how many twists and turns. For what is taking the place of a legit studio album, quite simply, there's too many 'distractions'.
If this was presented as a compilation, I could cut it a little slack, but as a studio release it is lacking. I've enjoyed most the singles as well (not Bloodywood, though), and those songs work as individual releases but when they're collected in one place and meant to represent a new studio album (when half the album is already months to years old) it just doesn't work as well.

Yeah, none of those other bands could write a Megitsune, Karate, Yava, Syncopation etc. If they tried they would probably fail miserably. The core writers obviously has their style.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, but either way... even if other people could write songs like this (which I'm sure they could if they decided to) they couldn't get away with performing it. I think the idol thing combined with the common knowledge that the girls didn't even like metal when the band started, combined with the fact that they don't write their own songs anyway, combined with the everything-but-the-kitchen sink approach they've had since day one has allowed them to get away with the kinds of things that would make a more 'serious' band fail.

I'm not being sarcastic, those songs has distinct BM vibes that I don't think these collaborated bands could capture the same way

Haven't bothered with this band and I don't think this album will change that.
Great review as always.

I see the place for Baby Metal. I agree 100% that this feels like a comp. album of Baby Metal's features with other artist and a few new tracks for funzies. Ratatata! Is still the best thing on here.
Also, for the people that "don't get it" without ever really listening to it - go check them out live. You'll leave a fan.
Also, also - I too cannot stand Give Me Chocolate. It's the weakest song in their catelogue.

that track is a little too baby

of the two singles that blew them up (megitsune and gimme chocolate) megitsune was way better and actually a cohesive song, but because the latter track is more annoying and gimmicky it got them more attention.
I think that sums up my problem with the band.

Band has and will always be a meme to me, but was hyped to hear that Poppy track. Not bad.

That's a shame Feather. If you haven't listened to their last album, The Other One, then I would give it a shot. There's nothing "meme" about it.

I will check it out on my flight today but if it sounds anything like gimme chocolate, you're getting hit.

why would you wanna hit someone for their best track

Yeah gimme chocolate is way too meme bullshit, just like all the "comedy" internet/tiktok musicians. Unfortunately thats mostly the only thing that will get people to actually pay attention to new music they aren't already "vibing" to

"I will check it out on my flight today but if it sounds anything like gimme chocolate, you're getting hit."
No worries on that front. It is by far their most mature and consistent album. If you actually find something to like then I would also recommend checking out some specific tracks from their earlier stuff like Syncopation, From Dusk Till Dawn, Brand New Day, Kagerou, Starlight, and Shine. It's good shit. Especially live.
