Trick and DSU are where I started, his sound was a bit more alternative back then compared to how folky his new stuff is. Animals, Sarah, Harvey and Boy were some of the first songs of his I really enjoyed.
Beach Music is probably his saddest but one of my personal favorites, kinda underrated imo. Then between House of Sugar and God Save The Animals is where he transitioned into a more experimental sound that kind of divided some people. I didn’t understand what he was going for back then but I’ve come to enjoy both more nowadays.
Headlights feels like he’s come full circle and he’s taken bits from all his previous albums and meshed them together nicely. I’m really enjoying this album.

Ngl I’ve found it very challenging to get into DSU and Beach Music. Much prefer the more melodic, poppy, folksy route he went down. There were glimpses of that on his old albums (like Sarah), but a lot of the tracks just don’t land for me. And yeah I’d agree that Headlights is like a mixture of all the things that made/make Alex G Alex G

Futures — cheers buddy! This is a good starting point for sure. Probably his most accessible right next to House of Sugar and God Save The Animals. Rocket and Animals are my two favourites fs

I will say his older stuff up thru Beach Music kinda played to a more alt/emo-centric crowd. I do think his new stuff has a more mature sensibility to it (and better production) but the old stuff is fun to revisit just because of where I was when I first heard it.

I don't think house of sugar is a good starting point as a whole, but it definitely has his best songs (southern skies, hope and Gretel).

Trick really isn't a bad place to start, you at least get a good encapsulation of his very rough DIY bedroom folk self, and then can see how he evolved from there. Also has some of his best and most charming songs. I am of the opinion he just gets better from there though, Beach Music all the way up through GSTA is just such a good run. House of Sugar is his best but agreed maybe not the best starting point

“but the old stuff is fun to revisit just because of where I was when I first heard it.”
Totally! I’m the same with some of his early stuff. Just hard for me to enjoy entire albums.
Idk, I think HoS is pretty accessible, minus the more experimental throwaway tracks. Also — Walk Away is so overlooked it’s crazy. Southern Sky, Hope, and Gretel are for sure among his best tracks tho agreed. But I’d put them on the same level as: Bobby, Sarah, Forgive, Guilty, Sportstar, Gnaw, After All, Miracles, June Guitar, Beam Me Up, Spinning, Louisiana

This has cooled off for me a bit, but the live version of most of the Headlights songs are very good.

I always thought his setlists were really good, a perfect sampler of who he is as an artist.

I think I just prefer how consistent he's gotten over the years
