I think a lot of real weird prog bands could do it, just not this one.

Very good review, and it's nice to see a wholly positive rev defending this album, even if I think it's ST's worst record by a mile. Take a pos, friend!

It is refreshing to see someone defend a widely despised album. I gotta respect the effort made here.

Thank you haha. I’m also not oblivious to their weird fanbase, and objective flaws. Also some of the things that people see as flaws i and I think their fans see as a strength.

Only sounds profound to 20 something tiktokers
Lol. I don't think Sleep Token has to sound "profound" to be enjoyable. I quite liked the album but it's not something I'd be able to play on repeat for any length of time. You can hate it all you want to, but their rise in popularity and likely their bank accounts speak volumes to their talent as a group. You can continue hating it while paying overpriced rent at your apartment working a job you hate. They'll be mashing genres and living rent free in your head for the next decade

Nice review. I think my only complaint is: how can you give a positive review and not mention Emergence? Maybe it's not this way for everyone who likes the album, but to me it's one of the best tracks. I'd say some of their best work at genre-blending, where the disparate genres feel like they fit together/play off each other instead of being crammed next to one another haphazardly. (Which I don't necessarily mind, even when it's jarring/disjointed. But I get why people prefer cohesiveness.)
The formula of their build ups definitely gets receptive, and this album doesn't have any songs like Gods or Vore that start of with a blast of high energy. But I definitely agree with you that when they pull off that formula well, even when it's become predictable, it still is satisfying. (Look to Windward stands out to me that way, and I think it's their second best album opener behind Atlantic.)
As for prog bands that pull off genre mashing well, my vote goes to BTBAM. They can be doing death metal, and suddenly there's circus music, or a folksy dance, or a melodic prog section, and it feels like a naturally smooth transition.

as lukewarm as i am on this it does bring me joy that something like this is topping the Billboard charts over Morgan "I Said The N Word And My Career Took Off" Wallen and the latest attempt of Aubrey "A Minor" Drake Graham to seduce people

They're easy to hate (don't get me wrong, I hated them back when their 2nd LP dropped) but I've grown to appreciate their past couple of albums. The fact they're topping charts is more props to them, why would they care what us music snobs think?

I like how people on here say this album is despised, and yet it is the number one album in the country. Despised on Sputnik for sure. Not anywhere else.
