Haven't paid much attention to these guys besides Australasia and Fire but this album is incredible so far.
Evergreen is so good

Sounds like a step up from previous records but nothing will beat Australasia and Fire

Man, quite impressed with this on first listen. A hearty salad of riffs

Is the drummer still out of time or

It warms my heart to know that this joke persists in 2025

It’s not a joke; someone pointed out to me how out of time the rolls on Australasia are after I’d already been listening to it for a decade and it completely ruined the album for me lmao

He has definitely drummed out of time in a few recordings on their early stuff, but I haven't recalled any glaring instances from their last few albums lol

Totally agree the best thing that happened to this band was when they decided to become just a fun jam session band. You can feel how much more fun they’re having

I agree with Odal’s review but I also think Pelican still do post-metal and never stopped, it’s just become far leaner, and tighter in its execution, and as PistolPete pointed out, FUN

iirc, they said they write stuff post-What We All Come to Need in terms of what would be most fun to play live, and I think maximizing fun has been the best decision the band has made. I think Fire In Our Throats is still their best but I appreciate that they have completely side stepped even trying to top that

Yeah that’s real, there’s definitely a perceptible line between WWACTN and their previous material, but looking at it another way, I think City of Echoes was the true beginning of the change to their formula, and it’s after that album that they sharpened their mixing approach along with some other aspects of their sound
I don’t see their music neatly divided up the way they (and others) do I guess, and think their sound has evolved but never come close to deserting the Pelican ethos, even if we’re never getting another Australasia or Fire. They’ve just figured out how to say what they want to say without the pomp of 12 minute songs, and good for them (even though I do love their longer material, and long songs in general!)

I'd even go as far to say that the Pelican ethos IS the shorter, looser compositions and that the early stuff was them fitting more rigid genre molds (albeit, doing an awesome job at that)
City of Echoes was definitely the biggest shift for the band and them breaking off in their own direction. I actually didn't really enjoy it a whole lot when it first dropped simply because it wasn't Fire Part 2, but I was a dumb kid then. It rocks

100% agree with that Odal!!! Yes
And i also took my sweet time catching my taste up to City of Echoes. It’s my favorite of theirs now 🥹

Band is one of the OG post metal bands. Great to see new stuff from them.

Saw them play this live some months ago and it was pretty dope, I expect the studio version will be cool too
