Yahhp I think it reflects where they are in life now. The last song on Victory Lap says "Boys, I've bowed to the keeper's whip for so damn long, I think the sad truth is this enclosure is where your old man belongs", and to me this album sounds like a continuation of that.

Its not just the tepid direction, its the general songwriting, riffs and vocals. It's all lacking umph. The opening and closing songs go absolutely nowhere. The more I dig into this the more disappointed I become. Propagandhi are an incredible band but this is a huge retreat.

Yeah I really don't get anybody who's calling this a masterpiece. Lots of yasslighting in the Prop subreddit going on lol.
"Completely agree with this. Although, the beaver didn’t actually record anything with the band until supporting caste. But definitely agree there’s still a void he left behind"
For sure. Him joining for Supporting Caste & Failed States totally reinvigorated the band. Like I said, with Sulynn joining the band sounds a bit more "stock" in their songwriting and riffage whereas having Beaver as a creative foil really pushed them to their creative peak.

The first song has a good main riff and works well as an opener, second song is pure Propagandhi, but the album loses quite al ot of steam after that point. 'Prismatic Spray (The Tinder Date)' has the best lyrics in history and should be made into a cartoon.

I couldn't feel anymore differently about the first song, I think it's the weakest song and a curious choice to open the album. Its so languid and Todd sounds bored out of his tree.
On a more positive note, I really like 'Stargazing', not sure where it fits on this album but I find it incredibly charming. Never thought I would ever say that about a Propagandhi song.

Stargazing sounds like it came right off Power Windows

This is a lot more grappling with my own mortality and less anti facist fight the power.

Honestly feels like the title track was written during a previous album cycle. It's head and shoulders above any other track on here.
A Wilhelm Scream have a new record out this year. Im really hoping they can scratch the itch because this is so damn flat.

I get the criticism but I think it's still great, the nostalgic vibe here really resonating with me, must be my age. It takes Propagandhi level to make a let down sound like this.

It's a more nuanced take on their sound, and the vocal work is very self-contained and conventional. Production is completely fine, though, so I don't get the criticism in that regard.
Overall, still a solid album even though is lacking the energy that even Victory Lap still had.

On a side note, this album works better if you listen to it in the following order imo (very subtle change):
1. Guiding Lights
2. At Peace
3. Cat Guy
4. No Longer Young
5. Stargazing
6. Prismatic Spray (The Tinder Date)
7. Benito’s Earlier Work
8. Rented P.A.
9. God of Avarice
10. Vampires Are Real
11. Fire Season
12. Day By Day
13. Something Needs to Die But Maybe It's Not You

Everyone gets old at some point. This is a pretty solid and mature album by Propagandhi. I personally can't be bothered delving into the lyrics but I'm sure they punch above their weight as usual.
If you are hoping for some classic, blistering, melodic punk rock, this is not going to be the album for you. While there is still some great guitar work and I think the production is good, the overall mood of the album is slow paced and doesn't pack much energy.

The lyrics are kind of their bag though.

Goddamn what a uniquely bad time to put out an album this shitty, as this specific band. Mfers have an unlimited wealth of inspiration to draw on with current events, and this is the most uninspired flaccid shit I could imagine.

Nvm if I'm liking this for the wrong reasons but to me this is Propagandhi ageing like fine wine and I'm really digging it. Listening back they should have taken this turn one album earlier imo, Victory Lap now sounds to me more like Angry Young Propagandhi overstaying their welcome.

oof, that was a difficult first listen. It's really Propa getting old and slow. Not sure if I really need hat right now. Title track is a banger tho

this band rocks but that avg is a bummer, will get around to this eventually but dragging my feet to do so
wouldnt have thought that out of these guys, wilhelm scream, no trigger and strike anywhere that the latters 2020s output would be the most solid but

totally agree with the comments about beaver. his style complimented Chris's more linear guitar playing way better than Sulynn's. I get the sense that she isn't really a part of the songwriting process in the way it seems he was. dude added a lot of ~atmosphere~ that is missing here and some of these riffs just wouldn't have made the cut 10 years ago.
