Ok these beats are super saccharine sweet

I really dig the ethereal delicacy of it but ngl something about spoken word bits aside from a select few EXTREMELY opposing acts (lol Idles)is not my thing and just kinda drags it

Finding Money vox are cute and lovely and make me thinking damn this album would rule if more of them were like that and the spoken bits were more of am afterthought

I have heard a few critics say ‘they should be big’ but I’m totally aware they just won’t be, as something similar to your reaction is going to be the more widespread response. They aren’t ticking the Mike Skinner boxes you have to tick to get away with spoken word poetry.

My brother produces house/glitch music and his take was ‘the accents and poetry are bad but at least the production isn’t awful’. He thinks super tasteful stuff like Bonobo is the pinnacle with electronic.

They’re niche, they’re a bit much, and that’s going to be ok for what is going to be quite a small fanatical audience.

I think the ‘spoken word’ element to this adds a great deal to it. Very reminiscent of Underworld to me.

True, it is more Underworld, and they achieved some mainstream success without really being an absolute household name.

The spoken word wasn't quite as ever present as it is here and less verse chorus verse most of the time too, so slightly different deal.

Listening now and 'Wild Sign' is still good but definitely too long, that's the only time the monologue gets a bit too 'where exactly are we going with this?' - that one definitely has an Underworld vibe to it though...could have been a highlight but something not quite perfect.

I'm a little conflicted on this; what I love is that it sounds completely different to most everything else coming out at the moment and has some genuinely thrilling moments, but at the same time I can't shake the feeling that musically it sounds like a Paul Oakenfold album circa 2006.

mj - yeah, I guess I judge this band more on 'traditional song writing' within a nostalgic dance framework...rather than as a 'dance/electronic' act as such.

Obviously with the whole idea of this music being in a sort of nostalgic reverie then they couldn't sound too full on contemporary as that would work against that atmosphere?

Fair enough. That actually helps a fair bit. But it's complicated somewhat because I actively dislike and mistrust the feeling of nostalgia (which is part of the reason why I listen to and love new music, and always will).

I went for a pre-dawn run today and this definitely made it less of a chore.

'But it's complicated somewhat because I actively dislike and mistrust the feeling of nostalgia'

Rightly so to some extent, but if someone argued this band weren't applying any edge and context to the nostalgia then I'd disagree with that.

Agree. Since I in particular really hooked me last time around, and there's a lot here to like.

Where was the run?

Around the streets where I live. About 6.5km. And I run in the dark so people can't see me sweating and puffing. The biggest decision is what to listen to each time.

A good soundtrack for a street run

I did a coastal outdoor run in Lanzarote a couple of weeks ago, but the last run I did before that was that release day for the jamie xx album. Sadly I'm better off on the treadmill or not at all now, those years of tennis and football taking their toll.
