Probably the most polarizing album I've seen this year.
@Gyro I know brother, might be an awful take, don't know, I just went what with my ears and brain cells told me.

Nice review dewi. Glad this got a review. For me this is just more of the same, only slightly more experimental. I’m not after a record with the same energy as bedlam, but goddamn, give us something a little more lively

Cheers Gonz, your review of the last one was really helpful when putting my thoughts together about this one. And I agree, I miss their fire, i mean, who doesn't, right?

Side note, as much as I love the energy of the first two records and Bedlam, I still think Noctourniquet has the best songs, best melodies and some of the most breathtaking moments of all prog music I've heard. How you all feel about that one?

Noctourniquet is probably on my top 3 of this band, amazing album.

The album is okay, but too fragmented IMO. It would be nice to see them bring back some of the energy into the songs.
Noctourniquet has grown on me a lot over the years, great stuff.

"It’s almost impossible not to feel disappointed with The Mars Volta these days. "
That's really subjective. I adore the ST and the acoustic version so much. My fav albums of theirs outside of Amp and Bedlam. I got into them in 2017, so I had their whole catalogue at the time, with no nostalgia attatched. I never imagined I'd get the chance to see them live, or see them put out several more albums. So the past few years have been pretty incredible for me.
My initial impression of this one is that I don't like it quite as much as the ST, but I certainly don't dislike it by any means either. Need more listens to really solidify my thoughts on it.

Noct beats absolute ass agreed great album

yeah, Noct is their strongest post-Amp album
it's a little uneven but there's enough gold to mine, giving it an easy pass (it certainly showed the most potential of their more dialled-back "era" and I'd also take it over Bedlam)

OK good :D still surprised how low avg it has. But yeah I get some of its parts can be very annoying to some.

S/T with more room to breathe and more weirdness... this should be up my alley. But after 2 first spins, I am not really sure yet. Didn't really grip me, but maybe that will happen with a few more spins.

@Vlexis of course it's subjective, it's my own perception of how their last three last albums have panned out among their fanbase. I like s/t too, I do prefer their early albums but they are amazing musicians and it shows with every release.

Great review! I was not expecting to wake up today (or, ever) to seeing a new TMV album review. They're almost like an entity exclusively part of my musical past, something I don't expect to rear it's head, like the last few times they've released an album and the year didn't start with "200_".
Enticing...I will have to listen later. Review makes it sound more up my alley than their last few efforts, which I still refuse to give a fair listen because of the absolute beating they took on this site lol.

Mictlan to Iron Rose to Cue The Sun is an incredible sequence. Just beautiful stuff.

This feels like if TMV wrote like a Phil Collins album or something and it’s good it’s just not what I want to hear from them

"Part of me wishes the album would explode."
Yeah... I agree with this a lot, I think that the album would benefit a lot if it had some kind of old-ish like freak out TMV moment, but I also like it a lot as it is.
While they're doing this less abrasive stuff they should totally invest on doing a full latin-salsa record. That would be interesting

there are such a tiny number of musicians capable of turning theirselves to whatever musical leanings they desire, that those capable are heralded (and rightly so)…
TMV have their Latin influences, which are genuine (for obvs reasons) but their strength was bombastic, ridiculous, prog rock which incorporated said influences as an aside (after packing in a ton of Yes amongst other things)
It’s possible, just not likely. S’all I’m saying

Alright I gave this one a try. Not for me. I miss the energy, the passion, the frenzy. This was indeed Latin American Phil Collins.
