That is fair
Tbh I do find this record quite forgettable but there is something that radiates with the dull hazy semi-boring landscape of where I live that kinda just makes me enjoy it's..boringness? Like a pleasant static hum or the sound of a thunderstorm when falling asleep.
It is a very good boring.

gotta give this a listen

Yeah I guess it could be comforting as familiar background noise but it's funny to be saying of a brand new rock oriented album haha
I prefer ambient and singer songwriter records for that sort of thing myself

Yeah that's absolutely a thing. It's really good background music and I don't even mean that in a negative way

Incredibly disappointing. On most of these songs they just skip a second verse and a second chorus and jump to a bridge or straight to a final chorus. They sound bored and tired and the overall length suffers from it.

Yeah this didn't stick with me whatsoever
Numb To What Is Real is cool tho

It takes effort to make something so anodyne and forgettable … previous stuff obviously captured the tired 90s grunge and alt metal sound but it wasn’t lifeless
Seriously to make something that functions as completely unremarkable nostalgic background music from the get go… I’m impressed if that was indeed their aim
Numb to what’s real is the only decent song and as a single it’s a cocktease because the rest of the album is so much more bland

Sad that the singles were the only songs worth listening to.

I saw these guys open for O'Brother like 13 years ago and thought they were great, massive sound, their album was well-produced and they put on a great show with some real bangers. It seemed like they never quite got the momentum back after the name change and 'Ours Is Chrome' lost some dynamicism so I was disappointed but not surprised they kind of faded away. But so it's interesting to see the algorithm/the times catch up and discover this obscure grunge throwback. Makes you wonder how many other bands (hell, O'Brother comes to mind) could find second life if they just catch in the social media sphere.
And I agree this album doesn't quite capture what Jar had -- it's missing something in the atmospherics I think. This is a little more bluesy butt-rock (Ours is Chrome was similar in that regard, to my ear) vs the Smile Empty Soul guitar distortion interplay Jar had in spades.

I'm sorry but this was a very boring (and incredibly short) record. Just seems like the band is going through the motions and there's not much of anything on here that stands out. Songwriting, atmosphere, and production all sound so hum-drum. Lots of half-baked ideas that the band seem in a hurry to close out the to pad the tracklist.

It's inoffensive and not technically "bad" music. The album also just released so there's time to change ratings so I'm not so beholden to a 3.0 that I won't change it. But also, what's the point? A 3.0 is right in line with what this album is and what it offers. It's good because it could do a lot worse. The band sure as shit isn't gonna look at my 3.0 (or 2.5 or whatever) and be like, "damn we couldn't convince Sputnik should we just hang it up?"

Haven’t there been a few cases of aggrieved artists lashing out at negative reviewers and making complete turkeys of themselves?

Man that is super pathetic if true. All art is subject to criticism but art is also filled with gigantic egos so the lashing out thing, I guess, isn't surprising.
But please, Mr. Superheaven, don't take my critique too seriously if you do happen to read this!

To be fair it would be brutal seeing people ripping apart your art that you were passionate about and convinced was great, which I assume most artists do otherwise they wouldn’t bother releasing it right. But I guess if your skin is that thin you shouldn’t be in it anyway

Oh for sure. However, in circling back to this album, I don't hear a lot of passion on the record but I also get that songwriting is fucking hard and even if you have the juice, it's hard to consistently improve rather than just iterate on what you've done before.

I think I liked this more cause my tattoo artist was playing it in the background
