Excellent review my dear.
"Better than Spirit"
Ummm...

I'm a fairly seasoned metalhead at this point and I feel like my first listen of this is probably similar to how most normies feel when listening to anything heavier than Slipknot

all seriousness, Spirit of Ecstasy was already a step down from Alphaville/Vile Luxury imo, this is also worse… just in a different way I guess.

I found it lacking in coherence. Way more bog standard kitchen sink "avant garde" songwriting where kooky transitions are used as substitutes for good structure. The Portal swarm-of-wasps guitar tone doesn't do that any favors, and they're not even being as whacky as they could by breaking out jazz instruments or whatever. So it kinda diddles around being weird for most of it and there's little good hooks to grab onto. I guess.
idk feels like a C-rate band trying to be Imperial Triumphant worship.

Kinda disappointing album tbh, specially after the brilliant LP Spirit was/is. But it's not bad by any means. It's got three A tier tracks and the rest is still IT, it just lacks the jazzy pizzazz of the previous three albums and it certainly feels a bit stagnated at some points.

these are all far more accurate criticisms of Spirit - jazz elements on that record were mostly overstated and gimmicky, like a very self-conscious recycling of all the whacked out shit people praised them for on Alphaville. IT have done v well to pare that side of their sound back and focus on raising hell on this one

This is for sure better than spirit imo, spirit felt like all those things… this feels like not a stagnated IT but streamlined.
But I really don’t agree about any shit talking on Alphaville. By far my favorite Imperial Triumphant.

Oh Alphaville deserved the praise lol, I just did not sign up for a stale follow-on. But yeah, find it absurd to call this album stagnant when it makes such a clear departure from their last few years

I don't remember being so ho-hum about Spirit at least. Free jazz elements are too technical for me but at least it was interesting. I think they really shaved off a lot of that here. Or it's possible I could be senile and don't remember Alphaville or Spirit all that much.
