Bloated slop. A lot of good beats and solid features are spread throughout, but it significantly overstays its welcome. "I Am Music" serves best as a collection of unfinished ideas rather than a complete album. If you're a fan of Carti but prefer higher quality, cohesive works, listen to UnoTheActivist or Thouxanbanfauni.

On a less "serious" note, bro fell off after Die Lit fr

Totally agree that this is inconsistent and overstays its welcome at times, but there's just so much awesome material on here. Difficult to look at a project containing, like, 18 great songs and call it anything but a success.

agreed, i gotta approach projects like this from a different perspective, it clearly wasn’t released as a traditional album as much as a curation of bangers of different styles, and for the most part, it succeeds, it’s just a lot of fun

Yeah, I think that's right. It's very messy as a traditional album listening experience, but as a grab-bag of tracks it's superb. Probably best enjoyed as a playlist containing your 15-20 favorites.

I don't like that line of reasoning.

If he's putting out 30 tracks and the experience is a chore, than the album is a chore.

All these streaming era albums that turn the experience into a self-checkout line of picking and choosing your own playlist saves automatically get a ding from me unless they manage to prove their worth

that’s fair, but that’s what the streaming era incentivizes now especially for this genre

Totally, I get WHY they are doing it but it almost always craters projects from an enjoyable/artistic standpoint

i wonder if this would still be 30 songs if apps like spotify caught the extreme examples of streaming numbers-bait and changed their royalty system accordingly

There is an extremely good 12 song album in here.

If Carti cared at all about curation or releasing music at all, he would've dropped that lol

this hits a huge dip track 3 and hardly recovers for, like, 12 songs afterward...

@Odal Totally agree that this would be a better album if it was ~8-12 tracks shorter, but this is the musical landscape we exist in, so I think it makes sense to adjust one's expectations accordingly.

It's clear that Carti could not care less about music curation or putting out a cohesive album at this point, and I do think it's valid to consider the artist's intentions when evaluating a release. Completely understand why this would turn many listeners off, but I've come to accept that this is the reality of mainstream hip hop in the streaming era.

I don't think we do because this phenomenon is almost completely sequestered to mainstream hip-hop/rnb and the occasional pop album.
