This album caters to his long time fans and is accessible for any casual prog fan out there, I'm guessing this is why it's getting praise. He has made a lot of great records with various projects of his, won't deny that. Here, however, it seems he wanted to blend all his favorite '70s prog records into one and nothing sticks out.

This album is like the anti-Raven for me, and not in a good way at all. Much like that record, it compiles a bunch of Wilson's biggest prog influences into a grand musical smorgasbord... unfortunately, he doesn't really do anything meaningful or interesting with those influences, so the whole thing just comes off as incredibly hollow and meandering. It basically it takes my biggest problem with The Raven -- being overly derivative and on-the-nose with Wilson's 70s prog homages -- and makes it even more glaring because those homages aren't funneled into any sort of compelling songwriting in the process. Quite a shame, as I thought The Harmony Codex was a nice return to form after The Future Bites... but here we are

I'm gonna get shit for saying this, but I enjoy The Future Bites more than this. That album at least it had its own thing throughout and was a lot more incisive with its concept.

Valid points.
This is definitely starting to open up though.
I think there is an impressive album knocking around somewhere here.

Yep, you're getting shit from me for saying that haha

Listened to a bad mp3 rip of the album and it left me a very sour taste, many things were missing, like a bad demo or sth. Then came back to the official streaming on Spotify and YT, and re-discovered a whole different album.
Still don't know how to rate this, I just know that it has me hooked for the moment, and have found some incredible moments. Last album I loved by Wilson was "To the Bone"...

this may actually be more boring than TFB, at least that one had 12 Things I Forgot and King Ghost. this is such a nothingburger

Yep, good songs. Listening to the deluxe version makes The Future Bites more complete tbh.

idk men, i can't say i felt it the first 2 go-arounds, but i don't think i'd call this boring either. i like that i can hear some lightbulb sun-signify era influences and stuff. think i need to give it a couple of more gos before i form an opinion. def not a fan of the spoken word nonsense, but since he's not a great singer i understand why he forces those in. i think my initial impression tho is more positive than for the last one. if that's worth anything

I disagree with the review Porcupine Tree and Sreven Wilson in particular are great musicians, Steven has just recorded his final album, what should it be like after all his experiments, maybe he's copying Pink Floyd a bit but why not? I love Pink Floyd and Steven is the only one who can come close to them

Steven is a great musician, but he doesn't always strike gold, which is normal for an artist.

Really not sure what I think of this. I like the intended direction but the whole thing feels flimsy, like a classic case of having a lot of razzle-dazzle but not enough substance. Hovering at a low 3 right now but I'm still hoping to have a breakthrough.

I guess I'm just a fan of 70's prog worship Wilson. This is my favorite solo project of his since HCE
