Yeah this is hitting harder with more spins. Reminds me a lot of John Moreland.
I was a gravelweed and I needed you to raise me
I’m sorry the day came when I felt like I was raised…
“Gravelweed” will be a barnstormer with The 400 Unit.

I have this comfortably as my fifth favorite Isbell - right between the tier of my four favorites and the tier of four weaker releases:
1) Southeastern
2) The Nashville Sound
3) Something More Than Free
4) Weathervanes
5) Foxes In The Snow
6) Here We Rest
7) Sirens Of The Ditch
8) Reunions
9) Jason Isbell And The 400 Unit

Yes, love that one too.
Not sure yet where this album ranks in his discography, need to let it simmer a bit longer. Btw am I the only one who finds the title track really annoying?

The first six on this are so so good - the rest is growing but maybe a shade below as a run of tunes.

Closer is my favorite but first half might be a bit better than the second half overall.
I think the title track is a weaker tune but don't find it annoying.

Title track is incredible, I can always get down to some old school blues “evil woman” shit. Haunting stuff.

You’re like sleep, take what I can get
But I gotta make some sense of this, so here the fuck I sit
At 3 a.m., trying way too hard
To find the words to slow my sweet, addicted heart”

Alright I love the title track but what does it sound just like… I think it’s a decemberists song. Nearly identical guitar and melody but I can’t place it.
Edit: I think it might be Carolina low from what a terrible world, but this albums title track is way stronger

The first half of The Nashville Sound is good but I always found the back half there to be one of Isbell’s weakest runs, idk that album always struck me as a notably weaker release, I just don’t connect with most of those songs very strongly. “If We Were Vampires” is the only one I really love there, that pretty much scrapes the album up to a decent 3.5 but otherwise it would probably be my least favorite (Here We Rest is even more inconsistent but at least it has two hard classics in “Alabama Pines” and “Codeine”).

I do think the first half is stronger, Last of my Kind and Cumberland Gap are a couple of my favorites from him.

I'm open and close now to minding the flame
She speaks in a whisper and calls me by name
And she says I remind her of Calgary, where she was raised
It's time to be brave…
