honestly dont think these guys were ever that monumental in the grand scheme of things. even wind shifts and waterfront have a few songs that lose my enthusiasm

if each album was in full as good as your sword my dagger or fist wrapped in blood or in a place of solace and of brave mountains we conquer, then maybe. but out of those two, the debut and rescue i cant even think of any vaguely consistent albums in their discog, and even at their best like idk i just feel like their peers pushed themselves more. i think part of it is shanes a pretty limited melody writer and has reused tf out of the same passages their whole career

and i spent the last two months in sceneland like my most jammed band right now is goddamn from autumn to ashes

the first three songs of this is how the wind shifts were their peak, even on the rest of the album those three stand out

This was fine/serviceable as expected. A step up from their last couple albums but that is a fairly low bar

They peaked with Massachusetts

BACK TO CALIFORNIA

Massachusetts always fucked me up since the first state prominently sang about in that song is California and theres another song on the album called California.

As I typed this I also just realized that those songs are essentially a part I and II with the first being about how she wants to leave Massachusetts for California but can’t make it happen and then California she’s gone and he ends up going out to California alone (either to find her or find himself)

honestly not a fan of either of those songs lol. might just be overplay but they feel so plain to me now, except the slight tempo drop in the breakdown of smile will always rule

my top 3 stein is prob the artist, in a place of solace and dagger

This is the first half of a double album, which the review oddly doesn't mention.

Edit: Nvm, he sort of alluded to it in the third paragraph.
