"Belakor are boring"

Then don't even try to listen to Kalmah or Countless Skies like pengui suggests LOL.

Maybe from 2000 to 2006... but they haven't released anything worthwhile ever since...

"I'd throw Fires in the distance into the hat of great recent melodeath releases, though!"

I had entirely forgotten about this band! Thank you for reminding me of them!

Never was big on Be'lakor either. I see the praise they get all the time and I just don't get it.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who finds Be'lakor boring! Judging by this thread, is it melodeath for those who don't like melodeath?

Yess @piri they made one of my fav records of 2023

I loved The Frail Tide way back in the day...found the band through myspace when they were up and coming with Ne Obliviscaris..didn't keep up with them though, became less and less interested in their albums over the years.

Lol belakor has a sound that I feel like is right up my alley but the execution just isn't there. I feel like their songs just simply aren't interesting for me

As for kalmah, I like them a good bit but they're not my favorite band or anything. Really like they will return and the black waltz though

I think it's fair to say they sit on the more progressive, less catchy spectrum of melodeath. A matter of tastes, I guess. Personally I'm not a fan of 7-10 minute melodeath tracks unless it's a) Winter's Gate or b) the latest Fires in the Distance album, which was somehow both doomy/progressive and hooky

Kalmah has a high floor, low-ceiling kinda thing. I don't think they've ever properly blown me away but they got some really fun stuff. To The Gallows is such a rad song and I remember really digging Swampthony and 12 Gauge

^feel the same about Kalmah

Coming back to this album, it's remarkably consistent...albeit maybe lacks the standout moments of the debut

Favourite tracks? I'd pick the opener or the title track, but I'll put Between Directions out there too as my favourite Halo Effect song which features cleans.
