Hands Held High is some seriously corny shit but I’ve a soft spot for In Between. Don’t think it’s a standout or anything but the slightly mournful tone and minimalism are a surprising hit for me

The earnestness of Hands Held High wins out over time when compared to some of the r/agedlikemilk edgelord lyricism that came out in this era of rock/metal—'Critical Acclaim' by A7X is a good example

Critical Acclaim was a bit cringe but idk, I still dig the song.
Yeah LP have written some overblown or cringy sounding songs but one thing that I respect is no matter what, they write shit from the heart. Nothing they wrote ever sounded fake.
Chester SCREAMING "put me out of my misery" is still just a gut punch.

I remember hearing Bleed it Out and What I've done on the radio. I think that's about when they stopped getting radio play on the traditional alt radio for me.

"In Between is a failed experiment that deserved the cold embrace of the cutting room floor, and Hands Held High’s admirable sentiment is undercut by the clumsiest lyricism and structuring this side of American Idiot." [2]
Rare instance of me and Butkuiss agreeing on something

@Buitkuiss - If Mike refuses to do a 20th anniversary of Minutes to Midnight purely to retain fan attention to the reboot era, he’s a bigger asshole than I gave him credit for.
The demos of this era are fascinating, the first example of LP leaving their original sound behind.

literally the only song on here I dont think works is the last one. The rest are all fine.

The stretch from Valentine's Day to In Pieces is pretty boring

Damn, Little Things is a great song.

Why does it feel like what people really want to say is they didn't like that LP "softened up" their sound here when they cite only the softer tracks as duds

I think that went without saying?

i feel like these days that should've been mostly left behind because, LP have been doing style changes like this their whole run post-Meteora, it's like get used to it. guess it explains why Hunting Party was seen as this big return to form, I felt its return to heavier sounds was a bit forced (Rebellion would've even been cut from SOAD's B-sides compared to everything off Steal This Album imo) but it had enough hits to justify it

Yeah you can leave that behind for their new material sure but this is their third album. Most of us were fans from albums one and two lol.

is this the one with numb on it

I mean of course, I just mean it's been so long that a re-evaluation and new appreciation for the direction wouldn't be out of the realm of reason yknow? Nowadays i feel like this should be less castigated for not being Meteora 2 and more appreciated for laying the groundwork for what ATS and Living Things would do next, my rating here is also a little bit sentimental
@Johnny: lol you're thinking of meteora

That would be a nice charitable way to look at this album but unfortunately most people (like me) never did turn around on anything LP did after this so the opinions stay somewhat frozen in time. I personally don't mind the slow songs on here, my rating stands and I do believe all but one song on here are good, but I still ultimately prefer HT/Meteora/Reanimation's style to this.

Bleed It Out is a dud too

^^^ 100% agreed. It's the definition of generic. It might be the worst song on the album behind Valentines Day

Fair enough. I mean for years I didn't like Living Things much it's only been the last few that it turned around for me. Probably because I knew this kid who wore the same Burn It Down shirt and would only turn up for just that song and would refuse to check any other LP.
