This album is completely different from Valde. Valde leans heavily into that symphonic black metal influence, and those diminished chords were tough for me to get into; they're pretty much absent on Ashen. Plus, Valde has a lot more blast beats. Ashen, on the other hand, really dives into those trap metal-style synths. For example, Catastrophize has this bouncy synth that wouldn’t fit in at all on Valde. Listening to Valde again, I noticed it pretty much comoletely lacks the synths that Ashen has, and the atmosphere is way more symphonic. When I first tried to get into Valde, those diminished chords really turned me off because I wasn’t into black metal at all back then. Now, I can appreciate more black metal, especially the stuff with production that suits my taste better.

Black metal rules agreed. I don’t always enjoy the lo fi but it certainly has its place.
