Worked out better for Kendrick than it did for Coheed

Surprised at so many lukewarm reactions I've seen here on this. I get that Kendrick is held to a high standard conceptually but man this is just good rapping on good beats and I really appreciate the simplicity of it all. Different strokes I guess

Simplistic good rapping over good beats is exactly the justification I’d use for a 2.8. Average teetering on good like most of his discography.

Dude stripped all the meaning out of his lyrics. That's what makes his raps so good.

As an avowed Kendrick stan, I'm impressed by this, even if it's not my favorite. He's proving he can do anything. A light 4 for me right now.

He does the artsy shit well, like "reincarnated" and "man at the garden" here, but I love that he has been flexing his goofy side. "Silent Hill" was one of my favorites off Morale, and that vibe is like half of this album lol

For me the “artsy shit” on tpab pushed the creative bounds of the genre and felt exciting and fresh. Everything outside of that has been recycled and safe. This is a fine album for a budding talent’s first release, but for the guy who made tpab this is yet another insignificant blip on the radar that will no doubt be overly praised because rap-especially in the mainstream-has no one else rn.

To be fair TPAB is a pretty high bar to clear for any artist and it is probably my favorite rap album of the 2010s (tied w Piñata). I've enjoyed all of Dot's material after that album but Damn and Morale don't have the replayability or fun factor this release has for me. You could call this safe as it's a love letter to West Coast rap and claiming victory from the beef but I'm also of the belief every Kendrick release doesn't need to be some earth shattering shit.
