Very well written review and I agree with all of it. The potential is there and each element is fantastic. I'm also cursed with their first release (Neverbloom) being my starting point and favourite of this local band. I had the pleasure of seeing their hometown show a few months back and they were incredible, but their later songs lacked the distinction in structure that would allow for a well composed album. With that came a show that lacked any ups and downs and did leave you fatigued at the end.

Neverbloom is the best dxc album ever made
Old Souls and Worlds Apart are high grade metalcore
Funeral is distilled essence of mid
And this? Should I fear this? Have they been plagued by the While She Sleeps disease?

Neverbloom is indeed the best deathcore album ever made. Old Souls over the years I've come to realise is potentially a better album than Neverbloom, I think it has always just sat in the shadows of Neverbloom because it leant more into the metalcore genre. The melodies and some of the piano compositions on Old Souls are phenomenal.

This was by far their most mid record to date. Other than like 3-4 bangers, the majority of this album is forgettable as that's such a huge shame because Sean's vocals on this record were 10/10, but the music, the synths, the lack of any ethereal atmosphere or forlorn feeling, or feeling any emotion for this record is null and void. I'll still play neverbloom, old souls, and worlds apart for years and years to come. I won't be playing this record again after this year and that's such a shame...

The Sean doing an isolated scream of the name of the song thing is so frequent on this that it is bordering on parody. This is both bad and boring.
|
| |
Yeah every other song beginning with a soundbyte-ready title scream just starts it off on the back foot. It's a decision that might not be terrible in a live context, but for an album listen it's just immersion breaking.

wowow this is very generic, clearly trying to emulate this newer more popular metalcore sound. nothing will touch their first 3 ever again ughh oh well

Jammed this while getting a lift session in and got one of the better workouts I've had in awhile. This slaps.

Jammed Old Souls for the first time in a good while today, and am now fully baffled by their trajectory all over again. MAKE IT MAKE SENSE. Putting aside all the "main" instruments, the use of piano and symphonic elements on that album are so well utilized that they actually make a lot of those songs. They went from that to pew space laser noises. Like what the fuck man? Sean was infinitely more interesting back then too. Fuck these guys for going so bad lmao.
