it's as good as anyone could have possibly hoped
i would have been stoked for something on the level of bloodflowers, but we got something on the level of head on the door

The only song I struggle with is And Nothing Is Forever. Those sweeping strings are way too saccharine and OTT - and they stay throughout the entire duration of the song. A pudding well and truly over egged. Maybe if those strings had been reserved for a slow build and crescendo but as it is - I find it very fatiguing to sit with. Alone absolutely floored me and continues to get better with every listen. The rest ranges from great to excellent. War song is also one of the most crucial songs here for the album flow.

definitely an acceptable opinion

agreed that And Nothing Forever is the closest this gets to a kitsch turn-off, but this band's whole discog has walked that line (mostly for better, obvs) and Bob's writing/performance on all these songs is earnest and grounding as anything. good album!
"on the level of head on the door"
but lol cool those jets

I heard that intro and felt I'd walked into a recent Nick Cave soundscape...but in a similar way to recent Cave it works well

that outro is rufffff

And Nothing is Forever is a highlight for me - kitsch or not. I feel like it somewhat fills the hole created by the lack of a genuinely memorable moment of beauty like Pictures of You or Lovesong. I Can Never Say Goodbye does the same job in the back half.

"The only small fly in this gothic ointment is "All I Ever Am", a rhythmically awkward song Smith seems to be struggling to find a good melody to sing to."
Hard disagree, All I Ever Am is the best song on this imo and arguably has the best lyrics. The small fly for me is And Nothing Is Forever.

Enjoying reading people try to find a bad/weaker song on this album - it's clearly a struggle :D

Monumental album.
Can’t think of one like it recently that holds such weight and has had an instant impact like the days of old.
Were there to be a band to fill that hole it’s no surprise that it’s the Cure who’ve pulled it out the bag.

I've played an hour of the livestream, it seems fantastic. I'm definitely going to purchase it tommorow.
