i think every song has certain elements that work but just as many that don't - there isn't a single song here i enjoy start to finish. highlights are super fleeting. i keep thinking it's pulling me in then i'll just hear something i cannot stand that pulls me right back out again.

Also for me when i hear some of the lyrics it just deflates any sembelance of enjoyment. This has some very cheesey lyrics going on. I agree Noct they start on a melo death segment and you get into it and go "Okay cool lets see wherw this goes" and then it sinks back into the poppy stuff

lyrics weren't ever the strongsuit of the band and hyper-focussing on the vocals makes that far too evident. they just use a bunch of pretty and gloomy adjectives and don't offer any depth at all. they aren't terrible lyrics but they're about as direct and shallow as the music is.

listening to this right now and the production on this is way too squeaky clean for a band of their style

man, going from Moonflowers, one of their best albums, to this is just sad
very boring album

oh hey featured, thank you!
moonflowers is good but it does feel a bit... forced in retrospect? like it was forcing itself to be more dramatic and sad than necessary. that might make no sense but that's how i felt. i much preferred 'when a shadow...' though it was a more atmospheric and spacious piece it felt right and front to back it was a really nice experience.
i don't want to criticise too heavily as i do admire the effort of branching out artistically and i don't think this album is insincere, it's just a shame it didn't work this time.

The review really is great, even if I hope that I'll disagree with it once I get to the album. Pos

There's actually fleeting moments of great riffs here that do hold it a bit above water (i.e, "Charcoal Sky", also one of the more pleasantly gritty tracks here") but SO much of this album falls into this harmless hodgepodge of something between a watered-down version of themselves and a watered-down version of modern Katatonia (which is already a slightly less interesting version of TGCD-DEK era Katatonia lmao). I'm actually fine with how clean and spacious this is, it just needs more evolution imo.

i keep spinning this hoping my opinion will change but it doesn't. i am glad at least they've never truly made the same album twice (though hope and new moon felt quite similar to me) so they've always got something that suits my mood. perhaps this fits somebody else's mood and eh, good for them.

This is getting slightly better with each listen in my opinion. The style change and sound was so jarring on the first listen that it caused a whiplash. It's not anything amazing, but I could see it creeping up to a 3 or so. Some of the songs are really catchy.

i think i'm fairly settled on my rating and stand by the reasoning in the review - it's not meritless and there are good moments but on a whole it just doesn't work. i don't write off the idea they could pull off an album like this, but they'd have to go about it differently imo.

Under The Moon and Sun, November Dust, and Charcoal Sky are the best songs IMO. I really enjoyed this album overall. One of my favorites from 2024.
