full disclosure Sowing I saw your soundoff before I listened to this, and I immediately began dreading it more than I already was

This band is the musical equivalent of a wet paper bag

Lyrics are the biggest reason this album sucks. Chris still can write potent lines (see title track and The Karate Kid from deluxe version), but his obsession to sing about love in the most cheesy way possible is dragging whole album down. But there is still hope because he said that last album will be back to the roots effort (aka Parachutes and AROBTTH style), but I take his words with a grain of salt, because he often speaks about things which eventually never happen.

Why can’t they go back to doing what they did best? If they made Parachutes 2 id eat that shit up.

I think this is marginally better than their previous album, but at this point, they should just stick to playing the hits and do live shows

the last album is like a bottom 10 album ever tbf. hard to make anything worse than spheres, absolutely godawful inexcusable pathetic album is so shit it makes this sound almost okay by comparison
but that and maybe head full of dreams are probably the only bar this cleared lmao. this still sucks. thank god theyre only planning on dropping one more album after this. definitely time to hang it up

No problem with them being pop megastars and huge sellouts, but I literally don't know who Coldplay is trying to appeal to anymore

And I had such high hopes

I've honestly had some room clearing farts sound better than this shit

honestly more i sit with this, its about as good as everyday life
oddly probably the most oldplay influence ive heard in their sound in a while, which is probably smart since their last album is supposed to throwback to that sound
we pray and good feelings are music of the spheres tier tracks though. yeesh

What really bothers me about Coldplay is that they've shown that they're still able to do interesting and good stuff (Coloratura and Everyday Life), but they actively choose to record and release this tepid kind of pop rock, and this one is probably their worst one so far.
If we were talking about Maroon 5 or Imagine Dragons I wouldn't really get frustrated, because they've never really shown that they have some kind of potential; but I know Coldplay could (and should) do better.

Reading that The Chainsmokers still exist in 2024 is doing me psychic damage.

i wish their recent stabs at "arty expansive stuff" worked but it doesn't lol. everyday life is an odd one where its more musically adventurous than anything theyve done either post viva or ever, but its probably the most an album of theirs has ever exposed their limitations bc the album feels a bunch of interludes and because they shoot themselves in the foot with every other lyric (fuckin "trouble in town because they hung my brother brown"): they couldnt sell what they were tryna do there and it feels wayy out of its depth in a way the rest of their catalog doesnt because they dont usually shoot for that heavy of subject matter
basically i wouldnt have minded if ghost stories is just where the road ended.

I think I'm just tired of them writing tepid pop, as brandaao summarized perfectly above. Even the album before this had a few songs bordering on mild bops, and Coloratura. Every Coldplay album before this, even the objectively bad & bland ones, had something I could latch onto and become an apologist for. Nothing here is interesting or mildly entertaining to me... just zero redeemable qualities
To be fair, though, I listened exactly one time. I couldn't bring myself to listen to it again because it just felt like such a gigantic waste of time. But I might listen again today just to see if I was overly harsh before.

It’s actually impressive how far they’ve fallen.
