Responsible for the worst gig I’ve ever attended, has put me off this lot quite a bit
Sitting with your backs to the audience channeling the drone through your builder’s cracks

"I really hate these self righteous personal reviews with a passion. I get how it ties into the album title, but discuss the music. You have like 2 sentences vaguely describing the sounds of a couple tracks. This could have just been a blog post"
1) this review is deeply humble and does not strike me as self-righteous at all (see the band's bandcamp description if you want to throw stones there)
2) there is already a review up that considers this entirely in terms of music and band dev (which you were welcome to comment on) so i don't see how this comes at the expense of the album's discourse
3) op has no access to the blog function anyway
4) it's a godspeed you fucking black emperor album lol the *music* has boring af to discuss for around a decade now
"You have to laugh"
tasteless shit even for you two

Babys in a thundercloud is great but doesn't touch Mladic, Behemoth, Fire At Static Valley, even Government Came for me

Don’t sleep on Pale Spectator though, that track is brilliant

And honestly, Babys is probably an all-time top 3 Godspeed track for me. I always considered We Drift Like Worried Fire to be my favourite. Babys is on the same level and might even be better.

"Responsible for the worst gig I’ve ever attended"
Huh, they're responsible for 3 of the best gigs I've ever been to (I have seen them quite a few times though)

They are consistently phenomenal live

The 3 gigs I've been to are possibly my 3 favourite gigs of all time
Went for seating last week at the request of my friend and was probably the most enjoyable of them all. And got to hear east Hastings at last, which is one track they will never top

It's okay.
The inflammatory title is emotionally manipulating teenage RYMers into thinking the music is any more profound than their last few. It's not! It just acts as a defense shield for criticism.

Look… I’ve listened to a lot of music in my life. I haven’t been this enthralled by an album in a very long time. Just because you don’t see the value in the music doesn’t mean it isn’t there.
I’m not saying people are obligated to like the album or anything… but “I don’t like it therefore it’s objectively not good” or “I think the album is just ok so it’s objectively overrated” have always been bad arguments.
This also wouldn’t be the first time that this site has inexplicably been lukewarm towards an otherwise well-regarded Godspeed album. coughState’sEndcough

I don't think it's meant to manipulate. The sad thing is that Efrim's political maturity is about on the level of a rebellious teenager. He never grew out of his far left anarchist phase.

I liked this review a bit more than the other just because it sounds like the music impacted you in an unforgettable way and it stands out against the persistent inconsistency of post hiatus godspeed music discourse. I do agree that their new albums can feel underwhelming but if it gets people to reflect on life in a profound way I think that's worth merit. We can move the world toward something better, don't let fascists take that belief from you.
Also the title being a shield for criticism didn't seem to work all that well since people aren't having that hard a time criticizing it at all.

putting aside its efficacy as a musical explanation, this review is one of the most memorable pieces of writing I've seen on sput this year. pos'd.
personally the direct inspiration weighing on my mind helped nudge this ahead of most of the band's post-hiatus output sans Allelujah, but only slightly. I contend the theming here bolsters the music in ways the other albums in this timeframe don't, while conceding the fact the music itself doesn't approach anything different from their formula. "Babys" is my fave movement atm

Baby's in a Thundercloud is amazing
Not sure where I stand on this album as a whole though. A lot of it kinda just passed me by, but the moments of brilliance stand among their best material. Pale Spectator into Green Shoots certainly ends things on a high note.
