I think after this many years of putting out quality music its ok for Nick to put out an "OK" album that still has its moments.

I think I like this better than anything he's released this millennium except Ghosteen and maybe Skeleton Tree.

his album with Warren Ellis was amazing; prob the closest he's come to Skeleton Tree for me personally

It’s all about Let Love In and Henry’s Dream.

Yep agree Sowing. I didn't count that as it wasn't Bad Seeds, but for me, the run of ST, Ghosteen, Carnage and now this is sublime.
Also adore Boatman's Call and The Good Son from the 90s.

just gave this a listen, Conversion was a definite highlight for me

despite I'm usually annoyed by any music being labelled as "gorgeous", I will use it now for lack of a better word
the album is uplifting, soothing, and at times, pleasantly cheesy

It’s so weird to see so many people considering his run from ST onwards as his best when to me it’s like saying Linkin Park’s last few albums are way better than Hybrid Theory/Meteora, or saying that Radiohead peaked with Pablo Honey. We listen to and love the same artist, but for such different reasons that we might as well be listening to two completely different artists lol. ST isn’t even a bad album per se but it’s such a massive downgrade from PtS that idk how to act whenever someone calls it his best album, or one of his best

I second this Gyro, I'd rank ST around 8-10th of his albums with the Bad Seeds, and it is still better than this one (so far?).
If I also consider The Birthday Party, it goes further down the line.

"Conversion might be one of his best. overall felt a bit Good Son/Abattoir Blues lite though, didn't blow me away"
yeah, this is the general impression I'm getting also. It's a solid effort but is honestly lacking a special ingredient. I think many of the elements at play here feel like lesser versions of an already well-trodden path. When considering Good Son is my personal fave Cave + the strength of Abattoir (1st disc in particular) I SHOULD enjoy this more, yet I guess those parallels may also be part of the problem
I do like Conversion though

The Good Son rules. Same with Murder Ballads, Let Love In, Henry’s Dream, Push the Sky Away. Earlier Nick Cave is so damn good

I live in Melbourne and have been following Cave since I was a teenager in the 90s - probably saw him live around 10 times that decade. And The Good Son is one of my favourite albums. But honestly, the run since ST has been the greatest achievement of his career in my opinion.
I get that it's not for everyone.

Song of the Lake feels like it starts in the middle of the song. I adore it, but it is such an abrupt opening to an album.

Listened front to back about 4 times now and I am left with a smile on my face each time over how much I enjoyed this little nugget. I like the approach here and even though I love Ghosteen I am glad to see him get away from that style a bit more and expand upon other sounds and ideas. Hollywood is definitely a hard song to follow as the reviewer said. One of the few songs that have left me numb after listening.

I laid on the beach and listened to this album for the first time in headphones while on mushrooms and the close eyed visuals kicked in after Joy and there was an entire song that started playing between Joy and Final Rescue attempt that had Cave singing to me in an old log cabin bedroom. He taught me the lyrics the song and I sang them back to him. Hours later I went to listen to the album again front to back and the song wasn't there but I remember lyrics about "Saturating every blue that I knew in a different hue".

given this a few spins now and am convinced that it never drops the ball (although I really don't love the t/t) but takes until the second half to hit on something special. Conversion thru O Wow O Wow is a really lovely run

Conversion and Cinnamon Horses are easily my faves on further reflection, nothing really hits like those two. Even then, do they hit hard enough to make up for the lesser moments... Hmm
