This is really good. Denzel is super consistent but I'm still waiting on the masterpiece I know he's capable of. I actually think this is a return to form after Melt My Eyez which felt kind of pretentious/TPAB-lite to me, although it did have a couple insane tracks. I feel like a lot of these guys weakness is that the hooks are never that good. I'm always just waiting for the choruses to end so I can get back to the good stuff. It's why Kendrick is so next level IMO: he knows how to do a chorus when the song needs one.
I think Maxo's last album was actually one of the first "new ones" I've heard that delivers on that front. Local Joker and Mama's Purse have legit amazing choruses, which is no small feat for a guy who can't sing.
Personally, I don't think the features hold this back, though I agree that they are a little weak. Still: they bring some much needed variety to these tracks. On the downside, I was talking about the That Mexican OT feature in my office and now all my co-workers think I'm racist...

i think denzel is better than most at choruses, both on the hype stuff and the mellow stuff... but i think he struggles mightily when he tries to get "serious" or attempts any kind of social commentary. maybe one day it'll click but for now i'm just happy hearing him IN HIS FUCKING BAG again.

I just find his chorus hooks really hit-or-miss. They either completely hit, or it's like you said, I'm just kind of waiting for them to end so I can get back to the verses. He's really inconsistent when it comes to that.
And yeah, I'm also waiting for him to give us his masterpiece. For a minute I thought that was Taboo, but some of those tracks have aged like a banana. Melt came kind of close but not quite. I hope his next "serious" project finally delivers on his full potential

All his releases offer great tracks but this isn't as strong as his previous outfits in my opinion.

That album is not bad per say, but it just feel so one note compared to Meltz and Ta13oo. I just tend to jam less with Southern as a whole and the trap influence here is so present that it makes it less enjoyable for me
