The reviews for this from mainstream publications are absolutely insane. Feel like I’ve been listening to a completely different album. Or they’re shilling.

^^The album isn't streaming yet at Bandcamp to have a good opinion on the album, but it's no wonder really.
Take Metal Hammer Hellas for example, the major metal hard-copy publication in the country - their site https://www.metalhammer.gr/ has content too, but they are focused on their monthly hard-copy output.
If you initiate a search with the string "Rotting Christ", 6 pages are produced with articles that date back to 2014.
Make another search with the string "Mystras" (or "Spectral Lore"), and you get zero articles for a band with two albums since 2020 that are totally worth all the attention they can get.
For the sake of comparison, Mystras have been covered by several outlets in Hellas and abroad.
Go figure...

These guys have officially worn out their sound :/

Interesting review, more interesting than the single I checked, “Like Father, Like Son”. If I found that super boring will I like anything else on this or should I just skip it? This is my first intentional time listening to Rotting Christ.

Nah, if the singles didn’t click the rest of it won’t. It’s all pretty much in that vein. The band itself is worth checking though man, I think you’d definitely dig them.

Where should I start?

Just start at the beginning to see their evolution tbh. Also this fucking ripz. Idk I don't get the hate for the past 3 albums I love them all.

Will do, I might spin this in full first, holding out some hope that I will like it because the review makes me want to like it, purely thematically, and your 4 gives me hope too. Then I’ll go back and check the debut.

This riffs so ahrd and the atmosphere is on point. I think people get bored with the midtempo stuff but I love where these guys are at with their sound at this point in their career.

"Just start at the beginning to see their evolution tbh. Also this fucking ripz. Idk I don't get the hate for the past 3 albums I love them all."
I love the two albums before this one too, but this feels extremely recycled. Just think they would have benefited from progressing their sound a bit with this one as The Heretics just about got away with this type of writing formula.

I think this leans heavier towards the gothic folk sound than they have previously tbh. Maybe not a huge jump but it is noticeable to me. Also this album has tons of great melodic riffs. I see why people may be put off but I definitely love this lol.

"the band dilutes their sound in the service of the concepts"
An incredibly accurate sentence to describe the band's last ten years, maybe more. I couldn't have said it better. Unfortunately, another unsurprisingly riffless RC album.

Bro there's lots of riffs here lol.

To me, it feels like there's a build up for a good riff section, but then it never comes, it's always either building or pending. In comparison, Theogonia actually had a lot of riffs.
Mystras / Spectral Lore mentioned above, will overwhelm you even with a single track when it comes to the amount of ideas it contains. Sadly, RC are exactly the opposite today

The riffage here definitely isn't too in your face but its definitely there in spades tbh. Different strokes I guess. Like I said I love how they're leaning heavily on their gothic and folk influences here even more than before.

They peaked at Theogonia and it's honestly been slowly downhill ever since.
I just have no reason to spin this over that album (or the two after it).

Hmmm, some harsh ratings here. When I've heard the promo I pretty much liked it.

"They peaked at Theogonia and it's honestly been slowly downhill ever since."
Agreed although they were going downhill from such a peak that Aealo and Kata still came out really solid
Everything after though...

Exactly, not only did they not change up their sound very much, they've gradually focused more and more on the least inspired parts of it.

can see this growing on me some more, but for now it definitely is missing some sauce
