Idk, as much as I enjoy Tide/Thief it is super formulaic and it just feels dated at this point, I still jam it and enjoy it but I feel like they've grown since then. Bloom is really good tho, but I grew to like IC a bit more, they just really went all out with that record and Graves is such an incredible closer.

I haven’t listened to Tide/Thief in full in ages but I love the opener, Atlas and Into The White. Bloom, IC and RR are practically all favourites in my book at this point. Idk where this will go for me right now but I doubt it will pass any from the run between 2015-2020.

I’m just happy to have this run from In Contact > Rise Radiant > Charcoal Grace. Not a lot of current bands playing this style have a three album run this good.

@ShapeofJizzToCum I should give them a discog run soon to check because right now I reckon I disagree with basically all of this haha (except for Bloom being really good)

But I might have big nostalgia goggles for those records because CH were a band I saw heaps of in my early 20s when I started gigging, and I played the fuck out of those first 3 albums

Formulatic? I guess they did enjoy putting quiet sections before explosive endings, but that's as far as I can notice a reccuring formula there. Mixing has dated slightly, agreed here.

Still, personally I saw their music as being more emotional without being as direct as on last 2 albums which are more "emotions but in your face" if you get what I mean lol. Just personal preferrance about how to approach expessing them I suppose.

One change from that early era I DO enjoy is using more layered vocal sections and building harmonies with them. The downside of it is that it feels like it takes away from more powerful moments carried by a single Jim's takes. He also did start overall drifting into more mellow and strictly melody based direction. You can notice how on newer albums we rarely hear Jim going more aggresive with his expression and usually power/aggresiveness is carried by guitars and drums (Mute from this album being a great example). Ngl I'm a nerd for vocs that manage to sound both powerful and emotional. Two quick examples of what I mean from Tide/Thief studio diaries:

(Into the White's final section) https://youtu.be/9uwoc_aq-g4?si=aYFGX4z601D1SqR_&t=194

(Water's Edge's final section) https://youtu.be/0vDSbh2mdRY?si=kQ2N9eN7NinqLoCd&t=332

We don't get that much of it on new albums anymore, same with proggy instrumental sections (the one in Into the White is absolute GOLD), tracks tend to be more monochromatic now with the sound they choose. And I'm not saying that's a bad stylistic choice, just from my personal POV it makes the whole package be less varied and, because of that, slightly less interesting, especially when majority of the album is in major chords - I guess I'm just more of a "minor guy" too, take that out of context as much as you'd like ;)

I love how Jim’s vocals have changed. His pop sounding delivery on Golem, the whispered/spoken word part in Prey that comes back as a shouted part in Give Me Hell, more of use of hummed melodies in Mute, etc. also mostly being in major keys is a huge draw of CHorse for me. There’s plenty of dark sounding bands in this space, and very few uplifting ones it seems.

I've listened to the tracks. More charcoal than grace. Just not hitting it for me.

So far I'm really vibing with this. It is similar to their previous releases, there's no denying that, but that not necessarily a bad thing. The first 6 tracks absolutely rule, actually I only find Sails to be slightly uninteresting on my 3rd listen.

Yeah Sails isn't bad by any means, but I won't go out of my way to listen to it. Same thing as Resonate. I probably like Sails a little better since it's fleshed out a little more and the ending of it moves into The Stormchaser well.

A good step in the right direction after Rise Radiant which I thought was a bit mid and an example of a band just kind of coasting a bit. Some really great tracks on here but it's just missing a little something to push it into excellence.
