lol I thought about the Kim Petras comp too. Everything she has donepost-Clarity dreams of sounds as cool as this. Haven't gotten around to Problematique yet but I'm not hopeful

"Carly Rae Jepsen is about as close as we’ve gotten to someone who is a student of the game and knows how to effortlessly craft a masterful hook, but her aims and lyrics are far too tame to really provoke."
RIP Lorde back when she was a thing RIP Charli RIP Rina Sawayama RIP the other ones everyone has forgotten about
enjoyed this review, but not feeling this above a collection of middle of the road bangers backed with pretty cheap titillations (rly don't feel Slayyyter as a personality, as a opposed to an indistinct set of wow, sex??-isms). props for singling out Plastic though, thought that was one of the few songs here with real heft to its schtick

ha, I'm a massive Charli fan and kinda forgot about her for the purpose of this review. Whoooops.
Lorde is someone I consider more singer-songwriter than pop. Melodrama is one of my favorite records of the last decade, but it didn't have much of an impact on the musical ladnscape at large. Pure Heroine was a long time ago and, if anything, kinda broke the dam on everyone going for insufferable minimalist pop-rnb that's become spotifycore fodder

Yeah agreed tbh that Pale Heroine proved the more influential record by far in the long run (and I'd argue has the higher share of essential songs). Lorde came to mind partially bc of her attitude in interviews around the Melodrama release cycle, which imo epitomised the student of the game attitude - perhaps a little too thoroughly? Ig Melodrama epitomised the (non-80s) synthpop artiste aesthetic everyone* and their mum was pining after, but didn't rly change the game at all
*have also now remembered St Vincent exists wow WHOOPS ha ha long time no see *awkward*

Oh yeah, Lorde completely crushed it with Melodrama. It's a shame that whatever domestic terrorist attack thing derailed "Homemade Dynamite" from being a single because I think that would've helped that album's chances at being a bigger hit with the general public, certainly more than "Green Light" was since that was a really weird choice for a lead. I mean, "Homemade Dynamite" had a remix with SZA, Post Malone, and Khalid (which was mid, but all those artists were POPPING off at the time) and NOBODY knew about it!
St. Vincent is an awesome pop machine but I think her music is a bit too musician's-favorite-musician-y for a lot of people. Like, Daddy's Home is an amazing record but it is far too chill and retro for anyone who isn't kind of a music nerd to latch onto.

is it just me or is it very inspired by Marina? almost to the point of being a ripoff in fact
and her voice sounds like Gwen Stefani too

rhinestone eyes is a blatant rip of primadonna but aside from that track i don't really hear it

woah didn’t know she was from STL. Might give her a shot just based on that

she definitely wears her influences on her sleeve but shes also very blatant about it in interviews. Basically making sexed up 2000s pop music with some modern production, fucking awesome. Tho i will say, their debut mixtape had the most personality for me

This is better than every power metal album at least
|

Also better than all the entry level classical you listen to because you mistakenly think it makes you look like less of a glue sniffer
