No need to say “in this review” in a review, hardly necessary in many academic essays. The effort at signposting is appreciated just think the clarification isn’t worth the suffering/eyes-already-glazing-over of the tone. Plus if you’re gonna use that address you should do what your teachers said and present some hint of your argument
Since you talk about hip hop in general terms (acclaim as in this genre especially (?) arising from thematic/sonic integration and innovation) and since so much hip hop depends on the structure of the repetitive loop im curious what makes madlib’s better or worse in particular: you’re not gonna convert too many people clicking on this review to the aisle of thinking loops in hip hop are too simplistic or limiting.
Use present tense to describe art maneuvers, an album isn’t “was” when it comes to aesthetics
“Conjure the tempest” thing seems like a handwave-y uninteresting metaphor for me, doesn’t clarify much—for one, the tempest provides the innovation, the brilliance, or vice versa?
The failure of meat grinder to be an “auditory abstract” etc etc is counted as a fault, but where is the proof that it sets that goal out for itself and falls short? I could see it, but you’re not making it clear
I actually like the “idealism” you warn us about: gives me a clearer sense of what might please you more, alternate visions
The point about the supervlllain theme not landing fully is something, maybe could use expansion but feels grounded
“Parallely” can’t be a word…”in parallel”?
You should explain why that quotation of a verse exemplifies your point, would concretize it. English teacher vibe never just “airdrop” a quotation or end on one
the last sentence feels unrelated and honestly should prob incorporate your take more
Worthwhile review imo, understand your perspective but had to do too much inferencing as to how you got there. More precision

This ^
Rev does have a general air of stating your case but not then arguing / articulating it, and (as rob says) judging songs / ideas against standards that they weren’t obviously created with reference to. Wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t such a highly regarded album, but if you’re gonna lay out the contrarian case for something most folks seem to like (and not just that, but an album regarded as one of the best in its sub genre) you’re gonna need to prop it up with some meaty reasoning or else irk people more than you otherwise need to.

I appreciate the critique, very accurate and helpful. I'll try and be more careful on my next review. Noted, and thank you!

Aw thanks baseline sorry for hatin imma delete the hate. I think you have a lot of potential as a writer with unintuitive perspectives and I mean that hopefully not at all condescendingly
|

The verbose way which you write is sure to rub people the wrong way but not sure if that’s intentional or not haha

Baseline gonna baseline. The only thing in here worth offence is Tundra’s dumbass comment Tbqh

Respect for the rev and making a largely coherent critique that was sure to draw the ire of literally everyone, Sona's eval was spot on and I've got nothing to add
