You got me binging this band now. New album is good, but not as grungy as this one. Mike is even better though

He subbed in for Jake from ABR a couple years ago on short notice. Learned their set on the flight over and killed it

excited 2 jam. haven't connected with a new christcore band in a while, just feels right. like a warm blanket. is it heavier than this one?

I'd say they're pretty even. It's just a brighter sound overall, like I said less grungy than this one. More melodic leads and less pinches. Four Horses and The Fear of God get down and dirty though

i pretty much feel exactly the same as you i think haha. a bit more melodic and softer which i was disappointed on first listen. but after a few more i really dig it. drifting towards genericore but they make it standout still. i think the new clean vocalist is a bit better too, much more fitting. good mix of the softer ones like hurts like hell, coastal glow, waking nightmare and ragers like sleeping lotus, crucible, t/t.
and yeah mike is nuts lol. those black metal croaky highs he did a few times were so good. needz more gutturals tho. his range is just crazy, he has like 5 or 6 different unique screams haha.
and i finally placed it, he really reminds me a lot of the make them suffer guy. even the sound on this reminds me a lot of old souls make them suffer without the symphonics. especially the way they weave in the soft melodic parts and hooks with heaviness. waking nightmare is my fav and feels almost right off old souls but with a huge clean hook. maybe like make them suffer meets blessthefall. really great lyrics and storytelling. he does such a good job conveying emotion.
i think i like this a touch more but not far off. i'd give it like a 3.8 prob. this a solid 4.

Haven't listened enough to make them suffer to draw any comparisons. Glad you liked it though, been spinning the new one a lot the last couple days. Really like the tougher themes this band dives into (suicide, ptsd, miscarriages, loss of loved ones) instead of the modern mxc "undertow" writing. Didn't know it was a new clean singer but that makes sense, he does fit the sound better and I'd say the hooks are stronger overall. Mike really does some nasty work on it too

totally agree man, the lyrics are pretty blunt but they work and i like how he works in faith into them. very natural and i appreciate the sentiments. i like the trajectory they are on, some lineup continuity will really help. and yeah mike is such a star, worth it for him alone.
and i think you’d really dig old souls by make them suffer, heavy but emotional with great hooks and breakdowns. check out the song let me in for a taste. right up your alley.

mike's vocals are crushing live and he definitely has metal frontman star power, they've been on some secular tours like with born of osiris and i'm curious if they'll cross over and make the leap. like you guys mentioned, i think their examination of faith is complex thru suicide, ptsd, etc and positions them in the same territory as like an august burns red (had no idea mike guested for them).

absolutely has that star power. was just watching some live vids out of curiosity and he's just as good as on record. that's a cool opportunity that they were on with boo. hope they continue to takeoff and get some lineup continuity. i was reading an interview with mike, he works at fedex for work and initially missed the call to fill in for abr because he was working lol. wild how little money there is in metal.

I kinda doubt they'll take off unless there's a big Christian mxc resurgence. They're pretty upfront about their faith. Hopefully they don't sellout like FFAK

i was just talking with sr about that. that whole wave of christian metal bands was just insane. scream the prayer, cornerstone. so much momentum and just fizzled out hard. wonder why exactly.

I regret never going to cornerstone. Crazy lineups

i think the bubble burst on it commercially and both the bands + fans grew out of christianity. it was a booming industry that put insane pressure on 20 year old dudes to be spokesmen for christ and i think that inevitably leads to burnout/disillusionment. i know even guys like tommy from holyname have spoken about how that style of evangelical christianity wasn't working for them anymore in interviews and how that led him to orthodoxy/starting holyname. this new wave of christian bands feels different, it's hard to explain.
