@someone i'm not + dry cleaning obvs sound nothing like this - was rowan's mention re. queer overtones (which I originally said were a novelty for this style on songs this abrasive; rephrased this somewhat bc Midi did indeed walk that walk)
and Sint you will 4.5 this without a doubt *but* I'm calling your mum and she's cancelling your NME subscription so there!!

They had a chance to stick the landing on the closer (by dropping into a sickkkk double-time groove under the chime-y guitar thing and Fabulous Muscles vox) and they blew it

Anyway this has a lot of fun rhythmic moments but the songwriting and lyrics are pretty unfocused and "divers" is the worst attempt at experimental pop(?????) I've heard in ages

Also the singer is annoying AF on like every song but the closer and I guess Maria

Agreed probably would have 3.5'ed if the vocalist wasn't so annoying

Album starts off so strong but dwindles a bit imo; still very strong overall, really enjoyed it but after the first two tracks I started thinking I might be looking at a new frontrunner for AOTYSF. Not quite.

Any concessions? Well, the queer overtones on “Slate”, “Pure Mode” and “Maria” in particular at least have a distinct voice behind them

This smells of gatekeeping, and the surrounding paragraph does not adequately justify or clarify the potentially dicey statement, hence it remains sounding quite fishy. #teamcancelJohnny

Jk, other than that a great review obvs. Pos’d

Yeah queerness is so broad that I wouldn’t counterpoint it with much of anything stylistically in 2023–but you have a point, , and you don’t have to not say queer, just something more precise
