I really love Apocalypse and Dream River but I couldn't get into this at all, every song sounded the same

Ah see but what you miss is that he’s the good kind of boring.

Stick to The Tallest Dylan Worshipper on Earth zzzzz ;)
I dunno I can’t really be too invested with defending folk performers, one man’s favourite is another’s snooze merchant and I get it
But yeah, Team Callahan

This Drake Vedder dude is really my kind of thing. Still waiting for that "bring me to tears" moment like What Comes After Certainty" though...

I need to revisit Knock Knock, didn’t quite click with that one back when first listening to it. Kind of feels like an outlier in his discog, the “crossover hit” if you will. Admittedly I kind of like almost all the Bill Callahan albums more than almost all the Smog albums.

agreed that 3-4 song stretch up through Coyotes is fantastic. If ur a Bill fan seek out his covers of Cohen's So Long Marianne, Kath Bloom's The Breeze, and Fleetwoods Beautiful Child. Bill's my ultimate "i wanna sit on the porch and watch the weather change" music

Naked Souls, Coyotes and Drainface are lit af
The thin line between genius and boring/ innofensive folk is my struggle. Smth I have overcomed with Shepherd I guess..

This didn't really click with me fully on release, but after seeing Bill play these songs live (with Mike White on drums!) I've kind of discovered a newfound appreciation for them. I wouldn't call this his best given his massive discography, but it's still an incredibly solid album with some of his best songs on it.

You mean Jim White?
|

Shit, yeah, you're right Boney. Mike White is the director/showrunner on HBO's White Lotus (and a bunch of other less known indie stuff), which is actually a pretty great show.
