after a couple listens this album went from "obnoxious" to "obnoxious to the point of being intriguing" and finally also "subtly disturbing"

Agreed - the other one is too much of an outlier view on Sputnik, and also everywhere else pretty much...

The Sputnik mean is 3.5. The Sputnik median is 4.0, as it the mode. Only 10 out of 63 reviews rate the album lower than 3, and only 5 lower than 2.5. So yes, the 2.0 review is unquestionably an outlier. My statistics are EXTREMELY sound.
As for other sites, EVERY review is 80% or higher, apart from Crack's 70%, and Sputnik's 40% (Meta, Any Decent Music, AotY) - kind of a startling gap really.
I am not saying Sputnik should exist to repeat the same consensus as everywhere else, we all have our right to outlier opinions, just that this review is more representative of the Sputnik community's view, as well as the wider view (even if it is somewhat of an outlier itself - just less so than the other).
Out of interest, where did you learn statistics?

Why average the reviews post-publication? Are you saying reviews pre-publication are statistically invalid? That makes no sense. If anything, you could argue that reviews post-publication have been influenced by the staff review rather than the quality of the music. I do not personally believe that, I think earlier reviews tend to be from people who have been consuming and loving early singles or from existing fans of the band and a review makes very little difference, but I genuinely don't get why you would only average reviews post-publication... bizarre...
And I do think the featured review for an album should be the one most closely aligned to the site consensus, taking into account the quality of the analysis. Both reviews are very well-written, so why not feature the review that is more representative of the site's general disposition towards the album? I kind of think it hurts the site's credibility a little. Anyway, we can disagree...

"am going to say that the album average tanking by a full 0.4 since a negative take went up would suggest that said take is far from an outlier"
Lol so you're saying people read your negative review and were influenced by it? Got it.

You're right and you should say it, but of course Johnny will not agree with this because he wants to be ~different~ sooooo bad. Plus this review came before his.

I was terrified of expressing my opinion on this album until the stunning bravery of johnnyofthewell opened the door for me to live my truth. armed with his english degree and the same food metaphors and fart joke he’s been using for the past 3 years, he forged a path for us. thank you johnny for your sacrifice ❤️ the callous and menacing world of Jockstrap discussion is now a safe space for all

It's pretty funny that you think that people are not influenced by reviews from staff reviewers
Plus if you truly cared about different perspectives on albums, you wouldn't shit on people who like things that you don't, but you do constantly as if you want to have the "correct" take
