Great review Willie, some real nostalgia kicking in.

Yeah, if you're a fan of new Dark Tranquillity or Colony/Clayman-era In Flames there shouldn't be anything to dislike here. The ones that seem upset are the ones that don't sound too enthused with modern Dark Tranquillity.

Mid-life crisis: the album

If someone wants to make an album influenced by that Faith No More song... I'm ready for it.

Good to see you back in business. I'll be jamming this over the weekend.

Thanks. Looking forward to your feedback on the album.

also stuff like this just makes me appreciate and love Paradise Lost so much more, since they went back to their early sound and IMPROVED on it substantially

I guess I'm in the minority. I didn't like when they started moving away from the Electronic Metallica sound of Symbol Of Life through In Requiem. Also, none of their back-to-roots albums stand against Icon. They're better than Shades of God and earlier, though.

That's weird because your criticism of this album is basically the same description as modern DT (minus the electronics). To each their own, though.

This just feels very uninspired compared to modern DT. Of course I'll give it a couple more jams while hoping my opinion improves, this is just my first impression.

I can see that. My first impressions hovered around a '3' rating. There's a lot of nuances to the album if you give it a handful of listens.

Along with Arch Enemy Soulfly and Amon Amarth, this will complete my quaddie of jams for the next week. Sortd

Can't agree there Willie, Obsidian is the second best PL for me. Icon MAY have better standout tracks, but as a whole I don't feel like it can measure against Obsidian. I was referring to the albums before Icon as their "early sound" though, because Icon marks the beginning of another phase of their for me, ditching the growls and all

I will have to give this a PROPER spin though, Stanne is one of my favorites

As much as I grew up on The Jester Race through Clayman, this album shows how much I’ve moved on. The last melodeath album I loved was “the living infinite”, and at least Soilwork has broadened their sound, even if it’s not to my liking as much.

I'm enjoying this more than any post-Fiction DT album

The singles aren't the best songs thankfully, but this is still kinda just decent. There are some highlights but overall I don't think this will have much staying power for me

If you’ve listened to any of the singles then you’ve heard the entire album. Still a good listen but a bit disappointing overall

Great review.

I was pleasantly surprised with the diversity here after the singles fell just a little flat for me. The songs where they focus on atmosphere (Gateways, In Broken Trust) are the ones I liked the most, rather than the ones where they break out the 90's leads.

I guess I am just an easy mark for nostalgic shit like this. Spun it twice and enjoyed it thoroughly. 4 for now.

Same for me BladeRunner. Also, they stated in interviews they aren't trying to reinvent the wheel, they are just a group of friends writing and playing the music they love.
