Lizard is indeed incredible. Even I sometimes don't give it as much credit as it deserves.
This album...I have to be in the mood for it.

I was going to buy Lark's Tongue in Aspic today.
But this album isn't awesome so I decided not to.

Well, as a general statement, if you don't like this album, there's still a large chance you may like at least something from the rest of their extensive discography.

This review is blasphemy against everything that is prog, even though it is really well written.
And I like Moonchild. It's weird, but that's no reason to hate it.

I completely agree about Moonchild. The second half of the song just seems pointless to me.This Message Edited On 11.25.06

I have to agree about Moonchild; too over-indulgent, which wouldn't be a bad thing if it produced something exciting. Nowhere near as good as improvisations like 'Trio' or 'Starless and Bible Black'

Moonchild is great. The beginning is amazing.

Discipline is a lot better than this. From what I can see, the high rating and respect from prog fans is based solely on the fact that it's the first of the genre. It has some really good moments, but you're right, for the first "progressive" album ever, many of the songs don't exactly progress much, do they?

Nah, I just think this is a really good album. Sure, there are better, but I haven't heard anything quite like this before (I think it's aged really well in fact). I can imagine that King Crimson have probably done better themselves, so I'll be getting a few more of their albums soon, but this suits me fine for now. I agree that a couple of the songs can be boring at points, though. 21st Century Schizoid Man is by far my favourite on here.

I agree with you. it is a wonderful and great album, but both King Crimson and other prog bands have done much better ones (though I wouldn't say Discipline is a better album than this). It's the Sgt. Pepper of prog: probably the most influential album of its genre, but by no means the best.
@Spamue1G: get Red first, it has a lot similar to this one in its structure, with the only difference that it is perfect ;) Lizard and Larks' Tongues in Aspic are clearly better than this as well imo

"""......In 1969 I can see how In the Court of the Crimson King would be such groundbreaking piece of work but thirty-seven years later it just sounds a bit to archaic and dated."""
