Agreed decisions, Thorns does plenty that Renacer doesn't. Blast beats (yes), and moreover there's nothing like We Are All Returning Home, Wounds, or Surrender on Renacer. (Off the top of my head.) It's not a perfect record, but I still maintain it's their best - and I liked Renacer too. It's not as if Thorns has NOTHING in common with Renancer, but it's a more varied record that takes plenty of risks. And even a failed experiment can be more rewarding than successful mediocrity. Give it a close listen, onionbubs. You'll find lots of cool details in there.

the claim that renacers closer is one of their worst songs has gotta be the wrongest take ive ever seen on this band lol

I love this band, despite Buddy's below then average cleans at the best of times. Album is catchy and heavy in the right spots. Does what it needs to do.

This album hit with a wet thud aye? I enjoyed a handful of tracks but we need some heavier sf cause buddy's vocals can't carry a whole record anymore IMO.

Bumping this because the title track chorus is hitting me pretty hard
I feel like this album is super unfinished. Most songs have a few good parts and then a few that are just super cringe/boring

I am and always have been a massive fan of this band. This record sucked, as did If There Is a Light...
Everything up until then was progressing in an amazing direction. I even loved the metal core/hardcore stuff they did with Renacer/Pull The Thorns. It was progressive and new.
This and the last record are really bad. Buddy has lost it.

That's because Senses Fail was never just about Buddy, a lot of the other members made significant contributions to the band's signature sound and now he plays with, frankly, a bunch of expendables who don't write anything noteworthy.
To return to the old sound, he needed Heath or Garrett, or a new guitarist who really understood that sound.

thorns is super forced and about as weak as this (so still decent since this band is competent enough to be good when theyre bad) so i dont think its about style as much as how much heart he puts into it but the way he talked about this album clearly was more "what do people expect out of us" which puts a ceiling on how good anyone can be

I think Thorns is an incredible album, the band had a new lineup and a new sound.
The problem was in 2018 when they tried to go back to the old sound with a new lineup, and failed to recapture it. This album is just another go of that.

to each their own, if there is light is great. that album is a lot of fun and carries a lot of conviction that sells it well

Thorns has a ton of conviction, it's one of thay albums biggest strengths coupled with the energy built into it. This album has a lot of conviction too fwiw, it just doesn't pay off in the same ways. I do actually like it a little better than there is a light... in some cases but that album is a lot more consistent. Agreed on it not sounding like early senses fail. The rerecorded ep shows a stark contrast in the differences the band was going after in terms of sound.

Stereo Stargazer EP is still better than both of these last two SF albums
