Australians are generally more explicit about it whereas in the US it seems that most people were a bit more discreet about it in my experience - I'm not sure which is worse...I feel like closeted racism is somehow more egregious, and at least you can read someone pretty quickly in Australia. But hearing people sitting outside a pub talking shit about the Chinese is pretty bad.

The situation with the indigenous here is fucked and I'm not sure what the solution is. There's intergenerational trauma, health issues since their bodies aren't as adapted to the western diet, many of the younger generations are being pressured by older family members not to assimilate and if they get a job they're expected to share the income among the family which leads to resentment. The government is throwing money at them but it's not being used effectively and reaching the areas where it's needed most, they often get scholarships and special allowances which leads some people to get indignant toward them, it's a very messy situation.

yes my mothers partner (who i was over there meeting for the first time) was pretty openly racist in a sort of 'i just tell it is how it is way'. a lot of it boiled down to complaining about the 'special treatment' the indigenous people receive and how they 'squander' it.

his son who was a schoolteacher also expressed indignation towards them (arguing that they were basically ungrateful and not willing to assimilate).

tbh, i can fully understand why they wouldnt want to assimilate.

i am however looking into getting australian citizenship through descent and moving out there
