Any album with Heavy Wing can’t be a 2.5.

"You could count on the fact that no matter how many years roll on, fresh material from the Red Hot Chili Peppers would always sound contemporary, if not even a little ahead of the curve. Not so, here. Here, that spark of life & that hidden wisdom … they aren’t gone in ‘Unlimited Love,’ but they find themselves unfortunately buried by tired (if comforting) routine"
I must disagree. The nostalgia trip on this record is strengthened by how fresh it sounds (at times).
I must take issue however, with the track lengths here (perhaps even the amount...) - it feels bloated, instead of focused. 'Black Summer' is stellar though, it will be the soundtrack to my summer this year for sure. I kinda wish they had made even more of a "Californication 2" tribute with Frusciante back in business.

Special mention to the bass on here. It is awesome!

Reuniting with John was a step back in terms of criativity. They were doing ok with Josh, at least they were trying new things outside their funk-pop-rock trademark sound. Here, they go back to that old formula without innovation or excitement.

From the b-sides that were leaked from the getway the band would go for a very interesting vibe with Josh. John's comeback was modest, a lot of things remind me of stadium arcadium. I still think the 2013 b-sides are the best work of the band since bssm

Some highlights, but pretty forgettable overall. Maybe a 3 at best imo.

pretty much this exactly. the RHCP fans who didn't like the Klinghoffer stuff & don't like this, what the fuck are you even expecting, lol?

OK made it through this. Highlights were Black Summer, Here Ever After, Aquatic Mouth Dance, The Great Apes, Bastards of Light, and The Heavy Wing. Could be some more growers in due time. The album is decent but it definitely doesn't need to be 17 songs. This is destined to be one of those albums that could have been a strong concise release (~10 tracks) but instead is bloated. Not sure what I'd rate this; it's their best since Stadium Arcadium but that's also not the high praise that it seems.

the b-sides that leaked from the Getaway are better than anything here lol

"one of those albums that could have been a strong concise release"
ya, especially considering they apparently haven't put out an album under 45 minutes since the 80s apparently

couple of immediate positives I garnered for this one:
drums sound fuckin' great, which is becoming increasingly rare on popular modern rock or "rock adjacent" releases these days
they audibly sound happy to be playing together again, tho that 1 kinda wears off by minute, I dunno, 50-something of this beast
Flea's pride in presenting the vinyl was really great to see as well

wow does this actually deserve its 3.6? haven't checked

I thought this was pretty darn fun and it'll probably grow on me on repeated listens. That said, if you aren't a Red Hot Chili Peppers fan in the first place, I don't think this is the album that'll change your mind on them.
