@YoYo, yeah her singing is a huge part of the draw here, she has a great range of styles/approaches and does some interesting layering.
@Atari, thanks! I think you might enjoy this a bit if you go in with an open mind
@Doof, thanks as well! I think this is in all likelihood not up your alley, but if you do give it a spin I'm curious what your thoughts will be.

Apparently a new full album is coming soon too so will check that

Hmmm, yeah, think I’m most impressed by the artwork with this one, not my thing too much
Not a million miles from latter Bon Iver in places, with, for me, too ‘mainstream agreeable’ a singer for my tastes

Yeah that’s not a surprising take, the vocals definitely have that more mainstream pop type sound, which for me is part of what makes this really interesting but can easily be a dealbreaker. “God’s Country” is perhaps the closest to something you might dig, there’s perhaps a bit of Bon Iver “Beth/Rest” in that one, or perhaps the closer since as the review mentions that has a fairly different vocal style than the rest.

Cracking review Boney, will check tonight. Curious about the Weeknd comparisons - I greatly enjoyed his last couple albums, and wouldn't really expect his name to crop up in indie circles yet it makes sense that it does
|
| |
Ok yeah the vox in "God's Country" are definitely reminding me of the Weeknd

Thanks Dyl! Fwiw, the Weeknd comparison was for the newly released single for the upcoming LP, but it could apply to a track or two here as well I guess.

Holy shit these lyrics are dark

Album Rating: 3.5
There's definitely something here. I was conflicted on first pass. Pros: holy shit these lyrics are dark [2], God's Country, the melodies are memorable. Cons: Too much autotune, some songs blend together, could have had more variety in the pacing. I have a feeling the latter two cons will go away with time as the thing grows, so it's really just a question of whether I could view this thing as a 4.5 or 5 with the way the vocals are produced. Right now it's an easy 3.5 that I'd project becoming a 4 (possibly), but there's also upside beyond that if I can get past a few perceived flaws that I'm currently hung up on.
At the very least: this is good & kinda weird and I like it

Yeah I probably should have mentioned the autotune in the review, I think I did in an earlier draft but must have edited out. I’m always conflicted on autotune but I like it here - her earlier work doesn’t use it and her voice is great there too but here the processing adds that modern sheen that I find quite interesting. Perhaps I’m asking a lot but people may want to try Golden Age if they’re put off by the vocals here, or of course just try the LP when it drops because she may well use different vocal production there.
But yeah, I’m not surprised that folks’ initial reaction is “this is good & kinda weird and I like it”; my own first comment on RYM about this was “Kinda weird but also quite addictive,” and that was after a few listens had already smoothed out my initial response.

Hate to be the guy who keeps bumping his own review but I might need to write an addendum to this explaining why “Crush” is better than whatever your 2021 SOTY was.
