I loved Practice of Love but Viscera is probably my favorite Jenny Hval, so I’m excited to check this. Even if it wasn’t an artist I already liked, it seems like the style she’s using is something I’d be into anyway. Nice review!

I really liked the two singles I heard from this, she got a bit too experimental there for a bit and it compromised replay value for me

@jasdev She embraced more structured song structures and sings more instead of going on endless spoken word passages. And is so much better for it.

Thanks dedex! Yeah, this seems to be getting quite a positive reception, feels like an album with a broad appeal regardless of a listener's particular taste.

American Coffee is pretty nice

i think this is noticeably better than her last couple albums, but it does peak with the opener which is a bit of a bummer

for me the best is the 1st half of Jupiter. The droning at the end gets old quick, but overall it's still my favorite track here.

Welcome to Olympus, Sunny! Based energy to tackle a first listen with Jenny Hval as your inaugural staff review. You have warmly conveyed the pleasures of this album and touched on its themes in a way that feels welcoming to newcomers.
I was rather cool to this album at first, perhaps because I was such a fierce champion of Hval’s career thus far. It really seemed after The Practice of Love she was poised to make a grand statement of purpose, but this album felt at odds and more stately— not as vital at first glance. But upon reflection it has revealed itself as a perfect synthesis of the calm calamity of the pandemic, and her natural state to dismantle her surroundings with that universal specificity. It never feels like a retread, ultimately. Maybe we deserved the barnburner I expected, but after the all of it, I am grateful for this patient and observant meditation.

Thanks plane, appreciate it!
Very well said too, I can see this album feeling like a letdown given high expectations, it's quite possible my lack of any real expectation let me appreciate it immediately.

Viscera is an anomaly (and standout) so I highly recommend just starting there and moving forward. It’s all pulled apart and re-fashioned. Remarkable music imo.

Yeah even if you don't end up hearing her whole discog, at least check viscera. It's a one of a kind album
