Thanks everyone!

"I don't enjoy the Hogarth era albums as a whole as much as I do the Fish era, but my goodness some of the individual songs reach the same highs, maybe even higher"

Completely agree. The Fish era is much more consistently great, but the Hogarth era occasionally hits those same peaks from time to time

Yeah, that one's really good as well, and I feel like it ties together nicely with Care on a thematic level

Nice one Pika.

Marillion are a relatively new one for me. Like both eras.

Excellent review. So far, I listened only to Murder Machines. Very touching and catchy. Should listen to the rest soon as well.
I am at awe at how energetic they still sound. Compare this to Yes, for example...

They are much younger than Yes but I agree

You are right. But then let´s compare Heaven & Earth from 2014 with the new Marillion. Then it is a fair comparism, but the result stays the same

The organic sound and natural progression of energy on this album is astounding for how far into the band's career it is. Sierra Leone has one of the best buildups and sequencing on here and matches up nicely to Marillion's greats

@Xyph: thanks!

I think the negative Yes comparison is still pretty apt, regardless of the age difference; when the Yes members were the age of Marillion's current members, they were already putting out crap like Open Your Eyes

But yeah... Marillion might have had some serious valleys over the years, but they've never put out anything as bad as Heaven and Earth

I'm about 5 or 6 spins in, and there are so many pleasant moments, great jams, background vocal harmonies, and those Rothery licks and solos peppered throughout. The subject matter is as relevant as can be, and the profoundness of the albums title really makes you think....

Marillion has always been able to capture that melancholy and sadness like very few others have been able to do.

That's what I love about the best neo-prog out there. Taking the more emotional and dramatic aspects of traditional 70s prog and expanding on them... seems like Marillion have long been one of the best examples of that
