English is my third language, and metal is my obscure hobby. Writing this stuff is a fun activity I frequent on sleepless nights. Not more and not less. I appreciate any meaningful criticism and don't give a fuck about other stuff.

There are many activities, that I do exceptionally well, way above reach of most people, but writing reviews is not one of them. But it one day might be. Who knows.

How could I get offended by some post on the internet, come on. I'm not here to get any traction or impress anyone with my skills. I'm having fun while trying to expand.

Cheers.

Nothing to get excited about, very specific stuff. Move along. See you in the next write up, which I hope will step it up a bit.

Not to appear to heap on with the criticisms et al (especially if you're taking these points in good faith etc.) but have you considered getting someone to proof your thoughts in this form to better articulate why/how/where to improve in reviewing music. Doing this as a third language hobby must be challenging. I've barely got a grasp on my first. It's a pretty broad scope and there's quite a few ways to review here. What's important is: (not an exhaustive list)

Conveying what you think so any reader can clearly understand your points. They might not agree, but if you can spell it out for your reader you'll be less likely to receive hostile comments.

Provide examples - i.e. why and where does this suck/be awesome, even if you think it's common knowledge.

Not dismissing parts of the album, whether it's context or the music itself. It's part of the package you're reviewing. You can't pick and choose to ignore some while covering the lot.

Not put Metal Archives on a pedestal. It doesn't fucking deserve it.

I recognize the problems, there's a lot to be improved. I can formulate thoughts more accurately in the other two languages as my vocab is way broader. This is some limitation I need to workaround.

Why would I not put MA on the pedestal? It's the biggest source of information on metal that's ever existed. Reviews there can be pretty damn rideekilloos, but they're just an unnecessary addition to the encyclopedia part. And over the years I came to the conclusion that if it's not on MA it's not metal and I don't care. If it's there, then I might find it interesting. Everyone's free to disagree. I've got a soft spot for MA. I've used it since the beginning. 20 years cannot be dismissed. Community there is not any different than here. There are thoughtful users, there are trolls and everything in-between. Just like here. Nihil sub sōle novum.

Sput has the wonderful sound-off and rating functions, which appeal to me.

Either way, thanks for the tips, it'll help me improve.

lmfao that's the reason why you shouldn't put them on a pedestal

Honestly not terrible for a second review (at least on this website, not sure what you've contributed on Metal Archives), just keep expanding your descriptions and refining your prose. The main thing people will criticize you for are statements like "I’m too old to have time to follow this kind of nonsense. Apart from that I simply don’t care" because they're really not pertinent to the review and place personal bias at the forefront before you've even delved into the music. The review would have been better off without that entire second paragraph. Once you get past that point, things improve to the point of being an acceptable albeit slightly ameteurish critique -- but that's fine, because writing is nothing more than a matter of comfort with yourself and your words, so the more you write the better you'll get. Especially considering that English is your third language, I'll give this a pos. Keep writing, read other reviews, and be open to constructive criticism!

@dedex

Until now I didn't realise that my pedestal was wrong and that there were some guidelines what I should and shouldn't put on it.

There's even some parallel to be drawn. How is MA's guideline on how should metal sound different from guideline what people should put on their pedestals? Sounds kinda preachy to me.

You edit your message because you realised how hypocritical it was?

@Sowing

Thank you Sowing, I realise, that this is not a wonderful review. The mentioned paragraph is very confrontational and provocative. Probably unnecessary as well.

I'm opened for critique and hope to step up the game 😊

Nah fam I mostly edited it because I didn't want to spend time arguing tbh - which is what I'm doing rn and ugh. Should have been quicker or not commented at all. I put my OG comment back.

I think the concept of putting any source of information on a pedestal is dangerous because you basically take what's given to you for granted. If we take MA as an example, I still can't understand how they wouldn't deem bands like Botch or Slipknot as not metal. Whether or not you like these bands, excluding them from the history of metal is revisionism. But more generally, I think you shouldn't take any source of info as preach.

I respect that you put the previous message back, explained why you edited it in the first place and also explained your reasoning. It requires some courage and shows you're a thoughtful person.

I disagree with you on that matter. You named your reasons, I named mine and that's where we can put it to rest.
