“I’m the opposite, as I only started to really care about them after their previous album. but if you’re not into this aesthetic I totally get that”
Exactly! I don’t dislike it because of the quality, I just don’t vibe with that type of sound. I still have mad respect for them -they’re doing something different and are good at it - I’m just not a fan of the style of “it”.

Totally understandable point of view, especially because you’ve taken time to consider some level of objective quality before supplanting your own preferences. If those preferences don’t align, we can at least put up with “it’s not my cup of tea”. So be it.

I'm impressed by how well these guys integrate the folk/carnival elements with their metal roots. Too often you get bands that have two or more standalone styles alternating with one another for the sake of it. There's no only some seriously impressive musicianship here, but also a great deal of care taken in how each element compliments another, rather than the usual metal -> non-metal -> metal juxtaposition.
All that said, I completely understand someone hating this lmao

I'm sometimes partial to the whole 'here's some metal / here's some elements that should never be paired with metal shtick, we're going to keep switching back and forth'... but it's a very fine line which often fails to execute. You're right, these guys certainly don't rely on this potentially jarring contrast and instead attempt to seamlessly mesh the individual elements together in a way that actually makes sense.
The end result is likely an acquired taste though, for sure

Yeah it's nice finding bands that don't completely rely on the dichotomy.

Yeah this is kicking me ass pretty hard. So disoriented I don’t know which way is up and I’m liking it.
Interesting brand of dissonance in black metal, definitely nails the horror aesthetic in a fresh way. I remember their last album being more immediate / almost catchy (odd?) but maybe that was just me. That’s fine anyway, just going to embrace the chaos here.

One track in, and this is absolute gold. Best album of the year no contest.

The fact that the main guitar riff of "Quel Sale Bourreau" is just "Haitian Fight Song" is excellent.

man seeing this band's name takes me back. Vacuum was one of the first bm records I ever heard

Love these sweeping declarations in the year's first month.

I've gotta meet my "best album of the year" declarations by the end of January so I'll say this on at least 20 more albums...

surely AOTY changes like the wind in January because you can't account for all the things you haven't heard yet? When all's said and done it's unlikely my fave will actually be from Jan, but that's not something that can be known at this stage.
Having said that Feb might end up producing things worthy of such sweeping statements for realsies, call it a hunch

Tis a fat month agreed. A lot of potential faves dropping then and March.

No way I'll be able to keep up, too much good shit upcoming coupled with stuff that's almost guaranteed heavy rotation. Jan's been easier to 'discard and move on', lol
Present company excluded, 'tis a keeper

Just found this, and it sounds sick! Hope it's got nothing to do with Peste Noir as well....
Great review @Gnocte

I'm not an expert, but apart from being French I don't believe the two bands are in any way related.

Ok guys apparently hyperbolic declarations as jokes are hard to decipher over the interwebs. This was a joke. The album is really fun, but I don't believe it will be my AOTY. I'm sorry for the confusion. Happy friday.

That's what you get for your attempt at humour, Walrus. I hope you've learned your lesson.
