Some good tracks on here fo sho. Agree that Jazz Hands is one of the weakest tracks and it's bizarre that it was picked to be the single.

It's ok but not as gripping as Spirit World Field Guide

Weird to hear Aes rapping over those trap drums in Abandoned Malls but I really love it

That sorta gamey sounding shit underlying Abandoned Malls is also great
>not as gripping as Spirit World Field Guide
A rare opinion, but one I can respect. This is less exhausting/more fun as a whole, even if it lacks the more pronounced throughline of SWFG
Weird how More Cycles is like a Cycles to Gehenna pt. 2, but dope

Ah man, this review making me want to listen to an album I know I'm probably not gonna like. Gonna give it my best go.

Teehee, you like any aes?
|
| |
I've only heard his last two neither of which I was big on. I really like Blockhead, though, and I like a lot of Aesop's features.
|
| |
I'm sure this is really good but I've had so many conversations that include the words 'did u know he has the highest vocabulary of any rapper ever???' that I'm skeptical

"What about jazz hands you not into? The sort of vocal-forward but semi-ambient clash for the verse?"
Yeah def, Aesop is way too loud over the beat during the first half, and when he leaves the track Blockhead only manages to do something interesting with it during the last 30 seconds. The ambient feel blows as an opener track, Wolfpiss grabs your attention so much better. Aesop doing brag raps over very mid Blockhead softboy tracks just don't mesh, and don't work a cool artsy juxtaposition way either

Good review btw

The way Jazzhands works is very intentional IMO. Blockhead lets Aes shine over a minimal backdrop. The lyrics take the forefront, which I feel are important here. It isn't until Aes's verse is done that Blockhead brings in the drums and let's the instrumental shine before closing out the track. I don't know, you either appreciate it, or you don't. I like it. Whole album is great, btw. Really enjoying it.

Oh no, the impossible kid is a doozy, hmmm
>I've had so many conversations that include the words 'did u know he has the highest vocabulary of any rapper ever???'
Oh no no no this is a worst case scenario. Aes is a funny dude, listen to hail Mary mallon - bestiary and report back
Thanks crypt. I get that for sure, it's a shame cause the verse on jazz hands is dooope
I'm witchu faded! Glad you're digging it

Not saying he doesn’t have douchey fans but yeah that’s a terrible reason not to listen to him
The Impossible Kid is one of my favorite albums ever

I am really liking this one (Garbology) so far so I might return to the Impossible Kid after! Anything from the early catalogue you'd recommend checking?

Yus! Tricky question, his old style is quite different (many many words in each bar). Regardless, give Labour Days a listen. If you're into that style, Float goes super underrated too.
In terms of more in the same vein as this, Hail Mary Mallon - Bestiary is probably his best side project, Malibu Ken is a very singular album (Acid King is goat tier), and the Lice EPs are all really fun. I'm not too well versed in Skelethon and None Shall Pass, but plenty of people seem to love them

His earlier work is where it's at imo. This newer stuff is alright, but his early work had so much more grit and energy to it. He had a lot more variety in his flows, too. Check the '99 EP Appleseed. That's a nice and digestible taste of where he came from. If you dig that, Float and Labor Days will both be a treat

Every artist will have their peak, and when they felt the most "hungry" in their career. Aes doesn't have much left to prove, and is basically a solidified legend of underground hip-hops far as I'm concerned. I personally think Impossible Kid was some of, if not his best work post-Labor Days, and this isn't too far behind that.
