If someone were to judge modern rock music as a whole based on this one album I would be inclined to agree with them that rock is indeed dead and we should pour cement in its grave.

It's a perfectly functional album that will do good for rock if it's commercially successful, it has just enough bells and whistles to keep it standing out and feeling somewhat unique in the modern day rock scene. If you don't like it, fair enough, but there's an entire audience that would find this album really enjoyable and catchy at the very least. Plus, it's without a doubt their greatest piece of work OVERALL regardless of what your personal taste is. Not one truly weak song on it. Good songwriting and decent lyrical chops, powerful and emotive vocals (especially compared to previous records) and an impressive execution of it's concept.

The bullfrog has spoken.
Any feedback on the actual review?

This can't be good judging from the singles. I think I'll just skip this altogether. Wretched was cool and they never made something similar, sad...

Wretched seems to be the generally accepted best album of the band, certainly my fave album of all time.

I don't think this has anything near the highs of W&D or even Set the World on Fire, but this is much better than most of what's on rock radio today. I think after a few more spins this might settle in as their 3rd best for me.

BVB and BFMV dropping within a week of each other, I'm back in 2013

The thing that really makes this album reach the heights the old records never could is Andy's vocals are SO much more powerful and less garbled like they were on Wretched. I've always wanted to love Wretched and Divine, but Andy's voice on it in most songs is just plain unappealing to me. It sounds super strained and overly gritty, where as on Phantom Tomorrow he not only sounds a lot more pleasant and smooth, but his range is a lot broader and his voice has more emotional weight. Going back to the first four records is tough for me because I just don't like Andy's vocal quality in those records. Everything after the Andy Black albums he's sounded so much better in. Andy finally has a voice that could land him a proper radio rock hit.

See ive got to disagree, Andy's mid era rasp is my shit

STWOF, Wretched and IV were the only ones that really had the absurd amount of rasp in his voice, but for me I just feel like it held him back, I think he used the excessive amount of rasp to compensate for having a weaker voice and range back then as well as poor vocal technique and it shows. It didn't sound bad all the time, except for on IV where I thought all his vocals were just dull and boring throughout. But the last five years of his career he's drastically improved as a singer. He always used to avoid hitting high notes live and on albums and now he does it every chance he gets and tries to go beyond his standard range.

oh yeah don't get me wrong, his voice has technically never been better than it is on this

This is definitely Andy's best performance. Couldn't stand the overtly raspy thing he was doing, especially on BVB. His voice sounds much lighter now and it helps him soar over these choruses. It sounds pretty great. I just wish there was a bit less pitch correction going on. A song like Torch should've been a lot more expressive but it sounds so smooth and fake.
Otherwise the album is pretty strong for what it is. Might even bump to a 3.5.
