I don’t get the already-mastered genre critique for this album. In 2021, what music genre isn’t mastered at this point?

I think you've missed the line there chief. It's not about mastering the genre, it's a quip about redefining a genre already mastered. Innovation, new, nu etc.

really hate to criticise a cool band for trying something new and going in a different direction, but this is largely boring

take out the heavy side and we're left with just OK shoegaze

Sir, may I interest you in this beautifully written review summarising what happens when metal is taken out of things and replaced with the dastardly non-metals...

Nah reggaeton was mastered in 2004 by Daddy Yankee with "Gasolina"

Thanks my demonic friendo! It's good stuff.

Heh. I actually love Damnation but post-DM Opeth isn't for me. Similar thing feelings to this - respect they're mixing it up, but lacks what made them special in the first place.

This is a great Deafheaven album for people who don't like Deafheaven

thought about concluding the rev with something like "Cool, everybody will like Deafheaven - except Deafheaven fans, perhaps"
