I want to say the sentence,

"VOLA are a band that are not afraid to wear their influences on their sleeve, but they are very much their own band, as showcased on their debut LP, 2015's Inmazes."

Should be rewritten as:

"VOLA is a band that is not afraid to wear their influences on their sleeve, but they are very much their own band, as showcased on their debut LP, 2015's Inmazes."

Referring to a singular band is non-plural because we refer to a band as one creative entity rather than when referring to each band member.

"in the band's relatively short career"

Wouldn't exactly call their career short anymore though, they formed in 2004 and released their first EP in 2008.

It might hurt to realize, but they're slowly approaching their 20th band anniversary lol

Also agreeing with you on the drumming being incredible on 24 light-years.

Good first review. I like this album but not as much as the previous.

first half starts strong but the songs start to drag pretty hard. I didn't find the dream pop-ish sections as effective as they were on Applause either

Surprised this took so long to get a review. Was definitely expecting half a dozen by now. Plus one for the drumming on 24 Light Years is amazing. Can’t help but feel like some of the album is watered down though.

These Black Claws is giving me serious Issues-era KoRn vibes

I really enjoyed this. There is something about it that just pulled me in but I do see why some people might be put off.

I am however curious to see if this album has any staying power. Feel like it might get stale after a few listens.

Let's wait and see.

I agree, I think what will end up happening is me leaving this at a 4 and bumping Applause up to a 4.5. I always enjoyed Applause but I think I never appreciated it quite as much as I should have.

Also 24 Light Years is like the catchiest thing I've heard in years.

Applause is one of my favourite albums of the last few years for sure. But this definitely has staying power, it also feels like more than 9 songs too.

Regarding the “short career” statement I was primarily referring to the time period from their first LP, as that was when they were beginning to get noticed, just couldn’t think of better wording without it sounding confusing

applause got a bit stale for me but thats only because it was one of the records from 2018 I returned to most frequently.

Love this album. The singles were obviously great and the second half is growing on me. Can't believe no one has mentioned Napalm yet, I've been waking up with that song stuck in my head every morning since this came out. 24 Light Years is a career highlight, and Stone Leader Falling Down is a nice Inmazes tribute.

If I had to say one thing about the review, it felt slightly jarring to dedicate a paragraph to Inmazes and jump right into talking about this album without mentioning Applause of a Distant Crowd, especially since I feel like this album bridges the gap between the two so perfectly. Otherwise it was a really great review, especially for a first one.

Tesseract's third = VOLA's third. stick to what works, don't risk, but jesus I expected a banger after a couple of the singles and instead here I am 3.5ing this and having it wayyyyyy out of my top 10 for the year already
