I've been waiting for this, and I wasn't disappointed. This album has a few great songs, but it's kind of dragged down by the pointless meandering they insist on doing all the time.

Yeah, at first I hated all that noise in the background but now I accept it and just enjoy the album.

I'm trying to get the Dream Theater version right now, but my program is being a whorebag.

Very well-written review, but I strongly disagree with it. This is my favorite album. Ever.

I am not a fan of jazz in any sense of the word.
After reading a comment like that in a review, taking the critic seriously becomes much harder.
And I don't really think the breakdown in "Money" is a "jazz break." Something isn't jazz just because it has a horn, or just because it is slow and trippy. I don't think the vocals on "Great Gig in the Sky" are really that "choir-like" either.

| |
How does me not being a fan of jazz detract from my authority on anything? It just means I have a different view on the subject than someone who does.
Oh and if you didnt notice I used the term "jazz" quite lightly throughout the review, and the choir-ness of the vocals was much more in relation to how they would appear later in the album than at that specific point.

Another good one out of you Iluvatar. I was waiting for you to post this.
And yes, before I continue on sounding like an old chum of yours, this is south_of_heaven 11. I believe I have figured out how to solve my problems with this site now, and will soon request to have my old profile merged with this one. This Message Edited On 07.22.06

While I don't agree with you sans maybe the female vocals part, this was a very well written review. Good job, Iluvatar.

The female vocals on Great Gig In the Sky get rather agitating.

Nope. Them's good vocals. I think.

Mes'sah says within the context of the album, the jazzy vocal wailing adds to the atmosphere.
But hey, what does John Paul know?

It's funny how someone who loves In the Court of the Crimson King dislikes DSOTM because it is boring.

Oh, I did notice. You really just used it incorrectly, though, not lightly. "Oh, this song slows down here, this must be the jazzy part."

Ya wow good job Iluvatar. I'm thinking you pulled it off. This album is terrible, unfortunately I can't rate it that low. This Message Edited On 07.23.06

your choice not mine...
This album is an experiment gone well, its not the first prog album ever but is still groundbreaking in its own way.

I'm really getting into crimson at the moment and lizard is absoloutely brilliant!

good review, I agree to an extent. This album is extremely boring and pretentious.
|

Could you elaborate on how this is pretentious?
|

It's sort of painfully obvious how pretentious Pink Floyd were. That doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing, though.

You have to be fairly pretentious to expect listerners to tolerate the "Time" intro. Tick-tock.
